ALT During an inspection tour in 1944, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel suffered a severe head injury when his vehicle was targeted by an enemy aircraft. In the summer of that year, Rommel was traveling in an open-top staff car, typically seating himself beside the driver to navigate. On this occasion, their journey was abruptly interrupted by an aerial assault from either a British Spitfire or an American P-47. A bullet struck the driver, causing him to lose command over the vehicle, which veered off course and collided with a tree stump. The impact propelled Rommel forward, slamming his head against the right side of the windshield. His skull met the frame with such force that he was immediately rendered unconscious.
