REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) may be one of the earliest signals of Parkinson’s and related disorders.
People with RBD physically act out their dreams, often years before other symptoms appear.
We are building a program to detect this risk earlier: rbdprogram.com
One challenge in Parkinson’s disease research is identifying people at risk before motor symptoms emerge.
REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) offers an important opportunity: it can precede Parkinson’s disease and related disorders by years.
Can we use clinical assessment, biomarkers, and wearable technology to identify risk earlier?
Not all sleep talking is a warning sign.
But recurrent shouting, cursing, or physically acting out dreams during sleep can be a sign of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).
RBD can precede Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, or MSA by years. Recognizing it matters.
I’ve spent much of my career caring for people with RBD, which can precede Parkinson’s disease by years. What if we could identify those at risk before neurological symptoms emerge? That’s our mission at Mount Sinai.
Most people have never heard of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).
People with RBD physically act out their dreams, sometimes shouting, punching or kicking in sleep.
RBD can precede Parkinson’s disease by years, offering a window for earlier detection.
We need to recognize it
Excited to launch the Mount Sinai Early Parkinson’s Detection and Prevention Program—a nationwide initiative to identify REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (#RBD), one of the earliest warning signs of Parkinson’s disease.

It’s crazy how talking with a science buddy is simultaneously what’s most likely to move the project forward and the thing that’s least prioritized in our schedule.
