WHAT IS ALGAE?
🌱Algae are TINY, plant-like beings that occur naturally in waterbodies around the world.
🐢🐟Algae is an important food source for fish, water snails, shrimp, mayflies, turtles, salamanders, and tadpoles.
🚨WHAT IS A HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM:
The rapid growth of algae in water that alters water colour, produces unpleasant smells, can create scum on the water surface, and releases harmful toxins into the water.
🛑Blooms are caused by excess nutrients from fertilizer, faulty septic systems, cleaning products, and personal care products.
👉📞Report any sightings of harmful algae to the Spills Action Centre:
ontario.ca/page/report-spill OR by calling 1-866-663-8477
