New review in AREES on the effects of climate change and elevated CO2 on terrestrial phosphorus cycling. Co-written with an excellent team: @sian_kg @bntecology Palani Akana Ayanna Butler Aria Carreras Pereira Savannah Cooley @vmeiji_ and Emma Lauterbach. annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10…
Great piece by Paul Hond in @columbiamag about @E3BColumbia work at @BRFConsortium. Some of our lab's work is highlighted, particularly Aria Carreras Pereira's excellent work with mycorrhizal symbioses.
At Black Rock Forest (@BRFConsortium), a 3,920-acre nature preserve in Upstate New York, @Columbia researchers are decoding the natural world in order to conserve it.🌳magazine.columbia.edu/articl…
Congrats to Aria Carreras Pereira for publishing a paper from her work as a technician! This paper provides allometric equations for young trees from 8 species of N-fixing and non-fixing trees. journals.plos.org/plosone/ar… @NSF @E3BColumbia

I'm delighted to be joining University of Delaware @UDcanr Dept. of Plant and Soil Sciences as Assistant Professor of Agroecology in September 2023! Reach out if you are interested in working together on sustainable nutrient cycling in agroecosystems huddellecology.com/ 🤎🌾
Colleen Schmidt published a paper from her undergrad thesis! Mirroring what we found in trees, understory symbioses at Waiakea sustained N fixation at high N supply, particularly at high light. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wi…. Congrats! w/ @FunktionalEco @Nfixers, Akana, Palmer @JEcology
Now in its shiny typeset form. @ColleenBSchmid1 @E3BColumbia

🌱2 invasive understory species partially downregulate N fixation in response to abundant soil N, in low but not high light conditions. Regardless, fixation remains high with potential nutrient-cycling impacts

Paper in @ESAMonographs: Tree symbioses sustain #nitrogen fixation despite excess N supply. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi…. Co-led with @NFixers, w/ @FunktionalEco, @StevenPerakis, Palani Akana, Rachel Arkebauer, @bytnerowicz, KA Carreras Pereira, @alexhuddell, @sian_kg, & Sarah Ortiz.

Previously (esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi… and elsewhere) we had hypothesized that symbiotic N-fixing trees in higher latitudes fixed N at similar rates regardless of soil N supply, whereas those at lower latitudes turned fixation off when soil N supply was sufficient.

Fertilizer recovery was surprisingly high in annual winter wheat, and was also quite high in the straw, roots, and soils in intermediate wheatgrass. Interestingly, 15N-labeled tracer fertilizer contributed only <3 % to nitrate-N in intermediate wheatgrass the following winter.

We found that nitrate leaching was an order of magnitude lower in perennial compared to annual wheat
