“The question was no longer how to make a painting about torture but what does it mean to torture a painting?” — #TitusKaphar #KapharBlackImages @DukeSlaveryLab
The "Black Images, Black Histories" conference is beginning at @NasherMuseum at @DukeU, organized by @DukeSlaveryLab at @fhi_duke.
Tonight, we welcome Titus Kaphar who joins the lab's co-director @jasminecobbphd to discuss making space for black history in American art.
"I'm not making those kind of calculations. I'm trying to make something that will rise above individual parts." — Kaphar
.@jasminecobbphd agrees. "You begin w/ something that's not yet finished. Agression isn't what happens to the work, but the nature of race & performance."
On this note, our evening with #TitusKaphar comes to an end. The conference will continue tomorrow at 10 AM at @fhi_duke, located in Bay 4 of the Smith Warehouse. Please join us for two panels with distinguished guests who will be sharing their work with us! #KapharBlackImages

Brings back painful memories of finding my father’s “Employee’s Record Card” while conducting research for LEAVING PIPE SHOP. He was born in 1926. For each in a succession of yrs he got a half-cent raise. Broke my 💜. Understood then his constant phrase, “We just don’t have it.”
