Scientists have used carbon dating to identify the oldest known musical instruments. The flutes made of bird bones and mammoth ivory come from a cave in southern Germany and are between 42,000 and 43,000 years old. @tommyhigham evertise.net/the-first-music…

Words like FORCE, FORT, FORTIFY, and FORTITUDE all derive from ‘fortis’, a Latin word meaning strong or powerful. Derived from the same root is the word COMFORT—so etymologically, to comfort someone is literally to restore their strength.

#MythologyMonday On the seventh day of the seventh moon the magpies arrive at the Bright River making a frail bridge with their wings. The joyful Weaving Maiden, eyes shining, heart fluttering, happily crosses the bridge into the arms of her waiting lover buff.ly/2Ji8ocC

Went out looking for blossoms for birthday cards got distracted by birds and bees, and butterflies doing the birds and the bees
And so home by moonlight, the two moons full & fat & hand in hand together, as they say it here. The twin full moons are meant to be good for beginnings, but for all my restlessness it's not a new beginning I'm hankering for, I think.
It is - as *everyone* tried to tell me - too soon after all the disturbance of the quarter day to have any great hopes of hunting these coverts. Which means I need make no very great effort, but can walk at ease, just fast enough to keep back the chill, and enjoy the stillness.
Enjoying the peace of the burg after the quarter day, and mainly managing not to laugh too obviously at apprentices with hangovers - particularly those who have been given the loudest or smelliest work today.
It is the aim of every housekeeper and steward in the burg to prove today that they have come through the false spring with pulses to spare, and to start the true spring with no dry pulses in their pantry.
I've just been hissed at because things that cats do not approve of include:
- uncharacteristic levels of festivity
- other cats hiding from the festivities in their space
- people hiding from the festivities in their space
- just people generally
- me specifically
There are apprentices. In the street. Singing.
Maybe I *am* too old for this? I mean, I'm not even hungover, I shouldn't hate the world this much on a quarter day.
Took my ill-humour to the runners' house, fir there is stable work to bury myself in even on the quarter day, and the groom's who drew the short straw for it giddily pleased at my assistance.

Settled at last in the back parlour of the Eagle, where I seem safe from families come to the burg for fasting day, and as I have ale & a hearthside & no-one to distract me, I should make good on yesterday's half promise to tell you about the quarter day as it is kept here.
Ach, I'm just sour and homesick and it's too hard to get merry on the thick sweet excuse for ale they sell here (& too easy on schnapps). It does no harm I suppose for the women of the burg to play blushing maiden for the day, like shy mountain lasses.
