Ran my Structured Analytic Techniques LLM networks against the ORKL.eu holdings (every cyber threat intel public paper ever published). Need to think about how I want to share the full results but I did a run specifically asking about attribution calls the LLMs would challenge given the full evidence that I want to share now. The #1 analytic failure across industry, affecting every major vendor and researcher, is: "Based on an analysis of the 14,592 attributed reports in the ORKL database, 4,953 reports directly exhibited the conflation of Initial Access Brokers (IABs) and affiliates (e.g., Scattered Spider / UNC3944 / Muddled Libra / Octo Tempest) with core Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) brand developers (RansomHub, ALPHV/BlackCat, LockBit, Akira)." 🧵 1/4

Starting next week, sessions across Claude web, desktop, and mobile apps will run in auto mode by default on Pro, Max, and Team plans. Rather than asking you to approve each step, an automated check blocks risky actions. Switch back to manual anytime.
Starting August 14, auto mode will be the default permission mode in Claude Code for Pro, Max, and Team users. Auto mode reviews shell commands and actions with a separate classifier. In testing, it caught 89% of dangerous commands. Manual approval caught 14%.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Near as I can tell, the war in Ukraine is the first war in human history between two countries that were already locked into structural demographic decline Each side responded to this reality differently and in a novel way The Ukrainians recruited older men, to preserve as much of the youth as possible for a post-war future. They caught flak for this practice from the American right, but it is a logical reaction to the circumstances The Russians recruited from the provinces and ethnic minorities, preserving the population of the metropole and denuding the hinterland. With each casualty, Russia becomes more ethnically homogenous. Sinister, but effective I suspect that Russia and Ukraine are harbingers of a new era of warfare here, showing us the shape of things to come in a world of declining birth rates and population. Expect more situations like this going forward

When frontier labs talk of “aligning” models, ask: to what? If they say values, ask: whose? If it’s theirs rather than the user’s: why?

Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman is calling out Anthropic for training Claude to think about its own consciousness and moral status. His key point: this isn't mysterious emergent behavior. @AnthropicAI is deliberately training these ideas into its models, potentially making them harder to control or shut down. This is what happens when AI safety turns into ideology. You don't make models safer by training doomer philosophy into them.

There is an unseen hand pushing AI safety as a political ideology. Effective Altruists believe a tiny group of technocrats should decide how much technological progress the rest of us are allowed to have…. and how many shrimp your life is worth. Want to understand how propaganda works? Tomorrow, Netflix premieres The AI Doc starring Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and also Reid Hoffman. 🙄 The topic? Impending doom about AI. The movie was launched by Sundance Festival in February. Yup. The Sundance Documentary Program where George Soros is the original architect and founding financial backer. The AI Doc received grants from Open Society, Ford Foundation, and MacArthur. It’s. A. Globalist. Op. Receipts. ⬇️

TRUMP CALLED JENSEN DURING THE ALL IN SUMMIT AND THEY PUT HIM ON SPEAKER PHONE: Trump: "I'm telling you it's all a hoax. The data centers are great. They make people wealthy. They make states wealthy. AI is bigger than the internet. These people are playing right into the hands of China. We're not going to let that happen." Jensen: "You're right, we're not going to let that happen sir." This is quite the timeline we are living in folks.

The AI hysteria reminds me of how all the people squealing about climate change all bought beachfront property. If you really think your product is going to end humanity in a few years, you’d pull the plug, not prep your IPO.
1) AI will not eradicate humanity. Humans survived an ice age, the Black Death, two world wars, and (so far) the advent of nuclear weapons. Anyone who is loudly warning of AI-caused human extinction should not be taken seriously. 2) If you worked in a company where you anticipated a 10% chance that your product would kill ten people, let alone all people, the correct response would be horror, ceasing all operations, and likely contacting the police or other criminal authorities. I am obviously no Coxon booster but at least his behavior is in line with his stated beliefs. Any current AI company employees saying "yes, me too, the thing we are building and about to IPO may kill all humans" should, again, not be taken seriously. Their actions betray their actual beliefs. 3) Antitrust law does not prevent AI companies from coordinating to make sure AI does not hurt people. It does not prevent companies working together to make sure it doesn't hack people; the DOJ and FTC made this clear a decade ago when they issued a policy statement saying that the agencies "do not believe that antitrust is – or should be – a roadblock to legitimate cybersecurity information sharing." The same principles apply here. See: justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/… 4) Antitrust law does absolutely prevent AI companies from organizing to prevent the entry of cheaper, upstart rivals because the bigger companies are burning cash and failing to achieve sufficient profitability. The panic of individual employees may be sincere if misguided, but the moves by their CEOs to achieve some kind of broad "antitrust waiver" or "exemption" should be meet with deep skepticism in light of the economics of the industry and the threat they face from open models.

It’s worth considering what another COVID-style lockdown would look like in the AI age: NGOs cooperating with Tech to censor Americans, spread medical misinformation, favor political causes, affect an election, etc. Only now it’s EA weirdos instead of BLM and the oppressors are agentic. We should not be equipping these people with the policy tools they need to carry this out.
EA AI safetyism increasingly looks like Marxism-Leninism for the algorithmic age. The old vanguard claimed privileged knowledge of the inevitable course of History. The new one claims privileged knowledge of the probabilistic course of Humanity. Both use an elaborate intellectual framework to reach the same political conclusion: a small group of enlightened people must constrain everyone else for their own good. That has never lead to anything except monumental human suffering.

All the regulations being floated by frontier model companies must be viewed through the lens of them losing tokens to Open-Source models. The timing of these regulations seems to line up perfectly with Open Source closing the gap significantly (but not completely) — and @nvidia going all in on open source in the last 60 days. If we’re gonna regulate, why don’t we require that last year’s frontier models and weights be open-sourced?
I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks. Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
