Proud dad moment: Our 2 year old picked a book off a pile and said "John Bunyan!" He also knows "Jane Eyre" and "Green Knight" (Sir Gawain and), though sometimes gets a bit mixed up and calls it "Good Night".

I highly recommend this article which gives more detail and insight into the incompetent processes and damaging outcomes of the threatened redundancies at the University of Exeter #defendexeteruni
How to kill a university’s reputation
After Exeter’s announcement that it will cut 150 academic jobs, is there any hope for higher education?

Worrying from Exeter - the University it seems planning to slash humanities teaching while telling colleagues it is “in line with the government’s industrial strategy”. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2d…

Horrified to hear about mass redundancies @uniofexeter including up to 25% of the English department. The livelihoods of many excellent former colleagues are under threat, and if I hadn't moved a year ago this would have included mine. Please consider signing petition below.

Literature and religion people: What would you recommend as introductory reading for an hour and a half class on biblical and religious contexts for English literature as part of a general Intro to English Lang and Lit course?
Forthcoming June 2026:
The Oxford Handbook of Allegory - allegory from Plato to Inside Out, drawing on literary studies, film studies, art history, classics, mathematics, theology, and cognitive science. It's been a fun few years!

"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Never had it been so with him before. Never before had he been unable to see God beside him. Yet never was God nearer him than now. For never was Jesus more divine.
He could not see, could not feel him near; and yet it is “My God” that he cries.
Thus the Will of Jesus, in the very moment when his faith seems about to yield, is finally triumphant. It has no feeling now to support it, no beatific vision to absorb it.
I had fun talking 17th century poetry with some well informed young readers at the Kids Talk Church History podcast. Enjoy!
