Reducing antibiotic use alone won't be enough!
Our new research in Cell Genomics @CellPress shows that poverty, overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and limited healthcare access emerged as strong predictors of future resistance trajectory to 2050

Tackling AMR requires structural interventions on inequality, sanitation, nutrition and health equity alongside stewardship. We advocate that surveillance and intervention must embed AI if we are to get ahead of this threat rather than react to it.👇

We are recruiting a PDRA in bioinformatics!!
Help us fight antimicrobial resistance and diarrhoeal pathogens at the genomic level across sub-Saharan Africa.
We are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Bioinformatics @kingsmedicine to join CARE-AFRICA👇
Trust me you will join an amazing and motivated international team across 🇬🇧 🇺🇬 🇪🇹 🇮🇹 🇪🇸 🇿🇦 alongside @IDIMakerere , Addis Ababa Health Bureau, @jembi_hs, @UniperugiaNews and @Causal_Foundry .👇

We are hiring a PDRA in AI at @KingsCollegeLon to join CARE-AFRICA an @EDCTP3 EU-funded project building an AI clinical decision-support tool to tackle diarrhoeal disease & AMR in children under 5 across sub-Saharan Africa. International team across 🇿🇦🇺🇬🇪🇹🇮🇹🇪🇸🇬🇧
#AI 👇
Diarrhoea is still one of the biggest killers of young children in the region.
We will use AI to investigate the links between climate, diarrhoea & AMR, covering Shigella, V. cholerae, E. coli, rotavirus and norovirus.
👇
The goal: tackle AMR at the source by stopping over-prescription of antibiotics and putting a real diagnostic tool in the hands of frontline healthcare workers.
with @MakIDI_Uganda, @JembiHealth, @CausalFoundry, Università di Perugia & Addis Ababa Health Bureau.

I am delighted we work together, your input has been/is essential. Thank you Dathan!
Proud to be an implementing partner on the CARE‑AFRICA project. @IDIMakerere will contribute data and expertise from Uganda to advance AI‑driven diagnosis of childhood diarrhoeal diseases and help curb antimicrobial resistance in SSA. #OneIDI @DathanMD

Diarrhoeal disease (DD) is the third leading cause of death in children aged 1–59 months, and most of those deaths are preventable and treatable. CARE-AFRICA is a project funded by the EU's Global Health EDCTP3, investing in AI to fight diarrhoeal diseases in children and AMR👇
An international research consortium led by Prof Tania Dottorini @DottoriniResLab @KingsCollegeLon is set to develop an AI tool to help tackle diarrhoeal diseases in children under 5 years old in sub-Saharan Africa, with €4.8m funding from @EDCTP3 ➡️ kcl.ac.uk/news/4.8m-project-…

ALT Photo of Professor Tania Dottorini with quote: "Ultimately, we want to be able to equip a frontline healthcare worker with a digital tool with the power to predict the most likely pathogen causing a child’s diarrhoeal infection based on their symptoms. Is it a bacterium or a virus? If it’s a bacterium, what antibiotics are known to be effective against it, and which ones should be avoided?"
None of this is a solo act. Deep thanks to my brilliant partners, @Makerere University, Addis Ababa Health Bureau, @jembi_hs Health Systems, @UniperugiaNews Università degli Studi di Perugia, @Causal_Foundry Causal Foundry, my institution, @KingsCollegeLon 👇
A special thank you to our funder, Global Health EDCTP3, and to the panellists and reviewers who believed in our vision.
