Messi beat the defender by flicking the ball to the right. The defender has no choice but to commit a (professional) foul to stop Messi outside the penalty box before he goes to goal. The defender uses his hand/arm perhaps to Messi's face but unfortunately we cannot see it from this perspective. His hand and arm do go up. Defender also uses his left leg to block Messi. Messi was fouled and defender NEVER TOUCHES THE BALL the ball. Messi is very quick and this 'freeze frame' as I did or in slo mo is the only way to see the detail. If one has played a lot of football it is better understood.
