The significance of the deal is that it:
-Gives the US military presence in Greenland independently from NATO.
-Gives the US veto power when it comes to Greenland's swnsitive economic security.
-Weakens Europe's position by bringing Greenland as a formal 3rd party.
In short, Denmark keeps the sovereignty of Greenland only on paper, while the US gains significantly more control over military control, economic security and political influence in Greenland.
All started with Trump's proposal to purchase Greenland, a classic "art of the deal" move of "wanting $10, demanding $100, settling at $50."
