I recently had a conversation with a NASA JPL engineer that was bemoaning the fact that the internal “Planetary Protection” department at NASA threw up substantial roadblocks for Mars missions in the name of protecting the pristine Martian environment. They will surely be apoplectic about this.
I kind of think we should just get it over with and empty a septic tank on mars so nobody can imagine it needs dedicated protection. Project Vandalize Mars.
Today, Pioneer Labs is announcing our first step towards terraforming Mars. 🚀🌼
With equipment that fits in just a single rocket launch, we can convert Martian dirt, water, and air into enough building materials to construct a small city on Mars.
To do it, we made the first microbe for Mars. We found the best microbe on Earth and used evolution to teach it how to source all of its nutrients directly from Martian materials.
The first astronauts will be greeted with safe shelter already filled with water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return journey.
This is the first step toward using biology to make Mars a friendly place for life. It lets us live off the land and helps us build the next great frontier.

Watching Stargate for the first time in decades.
I remember watching this at the time in theaters. I was enthralled, it hit the adventure on another planet button so well for me at that age.
I was shocked growing up to hear “critics” hated it. And by “critics” it turns out everyone was just aping Roger Ebert’s slackjawed opinion. That dude hated every adventure movie the Emmerich’s made in the 90s. Just had that stick lodged right up his ass.
This movie is great. I love it. I’ll be moving on to the series next because I didn’t give it a chance back then and I’m told that was a mistake.

Counter-Strike co-creator Minh “Gooseman” Le has shared one of the stranger stories from his time at Valve, Gabe Newell once spent around five months practicing Mongolian throat singing around the office
Le said Newell became fascinated with the singing style after watching a documentary, then started practicing it at work, walking through the halls and singing every day
“He would just walk along the halls just doing this throat singing thing, and he would do it daily”
According to Le, the singing was loud enough that “a lot of people in the office” became “kind of annoyed” by it, some employees reportedly started closing their doors because of the noise
The phase lasted about five months, before Newell moved on to other interests, including knife collecting and medieval-style axes and swords

When I was 17 I had a job interview at BestBuy.
I didn't have a car, and the store was like 3 miles away with no public transportation, so I walked there in a shitty cheap ass suit I got from GoodWill
When I got there the BestBuy person told me that I looked like shit. Which, in this particular instance, he was correct. I did indeed look like shit. I just walked three miles in a suit in the middle of July.
He then told me he wasn't going to interview someone who didn't take interviews seriously and told me to leave.
I told him I just walked three miles, had no transportation, and if he gave me some time to freshen up in the restroom I would appreciate the opportunity to interview.
He didn't acknowledge my request and asked politely that I leave. So, I left. I walked three miles back home.
I was in need of some money, I was absolutely devastated. I felt like such a fuck up and a loser.
In retrospect, fuck that guy. I was just a kid man. God damn, at least give a muthafucker a chance to shoot their shot.
when I was 16, my mom tried to make me get a job by handing out my resume to random businesses (very boomer I know). I went to probably 20 businesses and they all kind of awkwardly took it and said nothing.. i ended up walking into this furniture store with my last resume and this guy who was working there basically said "no we wont hire you" but then proceeded to critique my entire approach as a kind of "constructive criticism" and told me to smile more and to walk with more confidence, how to shake a hand etc.. he kind of looked like Joaquin Phoenix.. anyway I asked him if id done all those things would he have hired me, and he said no.. and that pissed me off really badly especially after having a bad day doing this stupid fucking task, so I told him his store sucked ass and I wouldn't want to work here anyway.. he got so mad he threatened to call the police and I gave him the finger as I walked out of the place which felt very rebellious and cool as a 16 year old. Anyway my resume had my number and address on it, and the cops came to my house and basically told me I was trespassed from that store and I didnt end up getting any jobs and I also got grounded
