not on my bingo card: an ε-δ definition of continuity in category theory

ALT Let Lin ←−− be the ∞-category whose objects are the presheaf categories SS with S locally finite, and whose morphisms are the continuous linear functors: A linear functor F : ST → SS is called continuous when for all ε ⊂ S there exists δ ⊂ T and a factorisation ST // F Sδ Fδ SS // Sε. Here we quantify over finite groupoids ε and δ with full inclusions into S and T ; the horizontal maps are the projections of the canonical pro-structures.

Recently I was asked if I could name my favorite PDE? Clear answer -- the Korteweg-de Vries (short KdV) equation:
u_t – 6*u*u_x + u_xxx = 0
Why? I try my best to explain in this 🧵

someone should write an essay about what 'actual image' means in this case, or what it means in modern photography anyway... looking at you @tweetsauce

In 2000, there were multiple breakthroughs in our understanding of solutions of the #3BodyProblem. One was the discovery of the figure 8 solution, where 3 equal sized stars chase each other around on a figure 8-shaped loop, discovered by Chenciner & Montgomery

Some Personal News: The past few years I have been working hard on a third book. It’s been enormously fun and I can’t wait for people to read it.
I expect to publish late this year.

Spivak and Fong's course on applied category theory remains one of the best introduction to the subject (if you're interested in the applied angle, of course) and it's freely available on @MITOCW:

Terry Tao and I spoke over coffee for like two hours yesterday, in part about diversity in how people think about math. We both agreed that people who hit these walls early mostly don't learn the way of thinking about math that works for them. It's an educational failure – at Los Angeles, CA
I would have thought this was completely uncontroversial. All except a few geniuses who persist in taking math courses reach a point when they say to themselves "I can't understand this no matter how hard I try." Some people reach it in sixth grade; others in high school; others in college. But isn't hitting the wall a nearly universal experience?

I'm teaching complex analysis right now. One of my students, Jackson Fellows, made this interactive tool to visualize complex functions w = f(z) as mappings from the z-plane to the w-plane. jacksonfellows.github.io/com…
It currently supports +, -, *, /, (), i, exp, sin, and cos.

One of my pet peeves is when a mathematician will claim some other area of math overcomplicates things, or is broadly uninteresting—most math (IMO) is pretty cool, and I think it’s good for the soul to approach other areas with a spirit of curiosity, rather than superiority.

too many people are talking about maximizing sleep, cutting out alcohol, taking supplements, they're minimizing screentime...why? so you can work on your stupid little app? so you can run 5K twice a week? if you're going to restraint-maxx at least do something noteworthy
