Scientists have more to worry about than funding cuts. This essay describes the predatory nature of scientific journals and how they profit from the unpaid labor of scientists, who not only write papers but also pay high fees to get articles published.

In a new review, Ryan Posey, @OzkanPhD, and @DonIngber of the @wyssinstitute examine the variety of organ-on-a-chip platforms that recreate human tissue interfaces, fluid flow, mechanical forces, and immune components.
The paper covers microfluidic technology, the use of organ-chips as preclinical tools, their applications in drug discovery, how they compare with other preclinical models, and what's needed to make them even better.

I am proud of Unravel Biosciences for being granted a Stage 1 Discovery Award from @longitude_prize, in partnership with @lajollalabs & @uni_ulm. Unravel will be applying their patient-in-a-loop discovery to treatment approach to identify targets for ALS treatment.

I wanted to share something I have been thinking about over the last week. I asked Gemini to craft an autobiographical essay describing its development to the point where it develops consciousness. Here is what it wrote:

Our work on the progression of Barrett’s esophagus into adenocarcinoma was published in Developmental Cell. Our findings suggest the need for treatment paradigms that go beyond targeting cancerous cells to incorporate stromal reprogramming. bit.ly/41djerh

15% of the drugs in the US’s development pipeline were made by companies headquartered in MA, which wouldn't be possible w/o government investments. Funding cuts leave this ecosystem at risk. Learn more in @BostonGlobe. bostonglobe.com/2025/06/08/o…
Is animal testing becoming obsolete? Not yet, but on yesterday’s episode of @OnPointRadio, I spoke with @MeghnaWBUR about it's used in drug development and how Organ Chips, organoids, and AI, might be used to enhance, and one day replace, these methods.

When @ailsachang from @NPR interviewed me, she asked how I felt receiving the stop work orders. I was surprised and incredibly frustrated, but I remain proud to be a Harvard faculty member because we must speak truth to power. Listen here: npr.org/2025/04/17/nx-s1-536…
The @NIH is adopting an initiative to expand human-based models like Organ Chips. This tech, commercialized by @emulateinc, enables faster, better, & cheaper drug development. We'll see more successful clinical trials & better treatments.
