Don’t mind this, Mets off the hook for the buyout of his option at the end of the year and gives Ewing CF full time. Hopefully Morabito gets the call, would be nice to see him play LF everyday and let Soto DH and occasionally play the field down the stretch.
I wouldn’t be totally upset if the Mets bring back Luis Robert Jr on a cheap deal, has the power and defense, hits lefty’s well and can serve as 4th OF, health is still just a massive ? But having a guy like him makes it easier to take a bit off Soto and give him DH flexibility.
At the end of the day this probably is for the best. it’s a lot of cash owed to him, but if he can continue to play the defense he has at 3rd and pair that with his bat since June/July, Mets are a better team with than without. Bichette/Lindor/?/Young/? Is a solid infield.
Bo Bichette is unlikely to opt out after the season, per @JonHeyman.
Spikerman is a nice add, fringe top 30 prospect with great speed and solid fielding in all 3 OF positions (center field mainly), hit tool and power tool are not really there, but if all works out could be a 4th OF in the future. Not bad for 2/3 months of Raley.
Trade summary, per @jaysonst:
Phillies get - Brooks Raley
Mets get - Luke Gabrysh, John Spikerman
People getting on Stearns for the returns in Peralta/Brazoban deals are just flat out wrong, Peralta has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball this year, and Brazoban while great is 37 and not a sure fire high leverage arm. I think they did okay, not great, not bad.
One piece I really like coming back in the Brazoban deal is Gabe Smith, Oklahoma St product, former 5th rd pick, has solid stuff and has generated a good amount of K’s/Whiffs, doesn’t walk many, profiles to likely end up as a reliever but a nice add by Stearns. T20 org prospect.
The Mets are getting 3 definitive top 30 organizational prospects, the Peralta move as we saw was a swing and a miss but to get some decent value back for how bad he has been. Pitre definitely my favorite player coming back out of this deal.
Trade Summary, per @Feinsand:
Rays get - Freddy Peralta
Mets get - Aidan Smith, Emilien Pitre, Gary Gill Hill
I mean a rotation next year of
Greene
McLean
Scott
?/Thornton
Thornton/?
Is awesome, and on top of it the oldest member of that rotation would be Scott at 27! This could be a move that Stearns makes to light a fire in this team, especially if the plan is to compete next year.
