August 26 is National Dog Day! 🐾 Your dog can be more than your best friend. They can be your research partner.
The featured projects in our latest newsletter help scientists learn how dogs think and age right alongside us. Pick one or a few and start contributing:
@darwinsarkfnd: Answer surveys about your dog's behavior and, if you want, send in a DNA sample to add to one of the largest open databases on canine genetics and personality.
C-BARQ and Fe-BARQ: Take a quick survey about your dog's or cat's temperament to help researchers improve pet welfare and strengthen the human-animal bond.
@DogAgingProject: Fill out a health and lifestyle survey about you and your dog to join a nationwide study on how dogs age and how both of you can live longer, healthier lives.
Canine Brains: Share your pup's history in two short surveys to help researchers understand how life experiences shape canine personality.
Our Outdoors: Record how parks, beaches, and other public spaces make you feel, feeding a national database that rates and improves outdoor spaces. Great project for walking the dog!

🐶🧬 New in GeroScience!
In this study, Eric R. Foreman and the @DogAgingProject Consortium examined how multimorbidity influences survival in companion dogs.
Using data from more than 50,000 dogs, the authors demonstrate that, as in humans, the accumulation of multiple chronic conditions is strongly associated with an increased risk of mortality. Their findings further establish companion dogs as a valuable translational model for understanding multimorbidity, aging, and longevity.

I'm excited to share the very first episode of Longevity for Dogs, the new podcast from the Dog Aging Institute @dogaginginst .
youtube.com/watch?v=6-v5942W…
For our inaugural episode, I sat down with my longtime collaborators and friends, Kate Creevy and @DPromislow , to tell the story of how the @DogAgingProject began, why we believe aging biology can transform veterinary medicine, and what we've learned from studying more than 50,000 companion dogs.
We discuss:
• Why aging itself is the biggest risk factor for most chronic diseases in dogs
• The scientific rationale for targeting the biology of aging rather than individual diseases
• The origins of the Dog Aging Project and the challenges of launching a nationwide longitudinal study
• The development of the TRIAD rapamycin clinical trial
• What we've learned from following tens of thousands of dogs over time
• Why healthspan—not just lifespan—is the goal
• The vision behind the Dog Aging Institute and where the field is headed next
This work has always been grounded in open science, collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of companion dogs and the people who love them.
If you're interested in aging biology, veterinary medicine, or simply want your dog to enjoy more healthy years, I hope you'll check it out.
And if you're already part of the Dog Aging Project community—thank you. None of this would be possible without you. 🐕❤️
