In November 2024, a cleaning crew in Japan turned a 195-foot dam into a gigantic Godzilla, without using a single drop of paint. Kärcher Japan and Saga Prefecture used the 59.5-metre-high Iwayagawachi Dam as their canvas. The trick was simple. Instead of adding anything to the concrete, technicians selectively blasted away decades of dirt, moss and algae with high-pressure washers, leaving Godzilla visible through the contrast between clean and dirty concrete. It took four months of planning. Seven specialists then spent around two and a half weeks suspended from the dam, using lasers and approximately 2,400 carefully positioned markers to recreate the monster’s outline. The scale was enormous. The original 1954 Godzilla was officially 50 metres, 164 feet tall, meaning the dam was large enough to portray him at roughly his classic movie scale.
