Please check our updated heritage monitoring map. With central Khartoum back under SAF control, many images are coming out. Sadly, the destruction is widespread and we will be updating the statuses soon.

Over the past few years @DocomomoS / a @DocomomoInt Chapter has been exploring cinema buildings as a typology through which histories of colonialism, liberation movements, and modernity can be read.
In Sudan, following the 1989 military coup, many cinemas were demolished, sold, or rendered obsolete, reflecting the regime’s restrictions on artistic and cultural expression. The programming, reprogramming, and deprogramming of these spaces reveal shifting political and social transformations across different historical periods.
The second iteration of modern conversations opened up discussions on cinemas across geographies that share parallel histories and trajectories from which we can learn.
The conference was convened by my mentor Suha Hasan with my assistance, and moderated by Nibras Abdelrahim, Hanaa Ali, Asia Nasir, Asmaa Zuhair, and Mai Abusalih.
Modern Conversations is now publicly available:

A glimpse of our War and Post-War Condition research, developed through @DocomomoS including part of my contribution alongside my colleague Dalia Omer, was published in the zine for Post- (and Pre-) Crisis Planning: Understanding Urban Planning’s Role in Conflict, organized by @NYUWagner Urban Planning Student Association and the Displaced Migrants Action Group. Honored to have contributed to the conversation.
