Burnham is wrong on Brexit.
He says it has done “more harm than good”.
But since the referendum, real GDP growth has been:
UK +13.2%
France +12.8%
Italy +10.7%
Germany +7.8%
Spain +21.5%
If Brexit is the simple explanation for Britain’s weak growth, what explains France, Italy and Germany?
The European growth story is a lot more complicated than the slogan.

Do you see what’s happening?
Andy Burnham says he will “take back control” by handing control over immigration policy to … the United Nations and “faith groups”.
He says he will “take back control” by refusing to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, which means we cannot control or deport criminals & illegals.
And then he says he will “take back control” by handing control over our economy and country to … the European Union, locking us into policies we cannot influence and institutions that aren’t democratic.
Again: do you see what’s happening?

Great video from Andrew Neil as he likens Labour’s conference to the Titanic - complacently steaming towards a rendezvous with reality.
Thatcherism heralded the most successful post-war period we’ve ever had.
Burnham hates it but the reality is we’ve become a failed State because we’ve moved away from it to embrace the things he loves and wants more of.

I see Macron is regurgitating the NBER nonsense that Brexit has cost the UK "8%" of GDP... 🙄
Reminder - this claim has been widely debunked, including by Bloomberg... 👇
nitter.cf/julianHjessop/status/2…
Three points most have missed on this Bloomberg story...
1️⃣ Bloomberg economists demolish the NBER claim of an 8% Brexit hit to UK GDP, which they rightly describe as 'misleading', specifically because it is biased by data from the US and Ireland (as others have noted too)...
2️⃣ Bloomberg come up with a lower estimate of 3.4% by stripping out Ireland and "adjusting the US growth trajectory to reflect pre-2016 levels of outperformance". But in my view this is still flawed, because it includes data from countries like Italy and Spain whose post-2016 growth has also been flattered by local factors (notably the rebound from the euro debt crisis of the early 2010s and exceptional fiscal stimulus). These "top-down" estimates are always dodgy because they start from the assumption that Brexit was the only thing that has happened over the last ten years...
3️⃣ The report also uses the WTO Global Trade Model in an attempt to capture the impact of higher trade barriers. This comes up with a lower number of 2.5% for the long-term hit, but is still highly dependent on the assumptions made. In reality, the UK's global trade has performed much better than expected.
In short, this Bloomberg study is better than most and the numbers are more realistic - but still far too high!
There is also no discussion of the Brexit benefits - including smarter regulation and savings on contributions to the EU budget - which should build over time...

*WHY DID THEY RELEASED THEM ON BAIL THEN?!*
This is absolutely insane.

This is how ‘all Labour X users’ apparently ‘must’ describe Burnham’s speech!
They must also ‘challenge and *report* any criticism!’
Because of ‘unity.’ 🙄

This was Burnham’s “promise” not to reopen Brexit on 18 May 2026.
Why? Because he had to win the Makerfield by-election, where two-thirds of his constituents voted to leave.
Utterly shameless and wrong.

NEW: Yorkshire Police officers attended training sessions that compared the views Nigel Farage and I hold towards Islamists to a racially aggravated CRIME.
They took issue with my description of the “hate marches” and the fact research found 46% of British Muslims supported Hamas.
I’m not surprised, to be honest.
The police have been infiltrated by bad-faith actors seeking to police speech, not actual crime.
Last week it was even revealed
the National Association of Muslim Police had published papers defending Hamas and describing terms such as “Islamist” as Islamophobic.
Why do we even have a “National Association of Muslim Police”?
This sectarianism is utterly corrosive to our society and policing.
The many brave and decent police officers who serve our communities day in and day out and want nothing to do with this nonsense are being let down.
The police should be united and apply the law equally.
It’s clearer than ever that our country is in a deep mess. Only Reform has the courage to fix it.

Labour have apparently decided that Andy Burnham’s conference speech will be about “hope”. That’s what you talk about in opposition. You tell people to keep hope alive because, when you get into government, you’ll change things. But Labour ARE the government. They weren’t elected 3 months ago. They’ve been in power for more than 2 years. Changing the leader doesn’t reset the clock.
After 2 years, with so much going wrong and Britain facing very serious financial problems, telling the British public to have “hope” is a little rich. Labour cannot spend and borrow without consequence and then, when the consequences arrive, offer the country “hope”.
Andy Burnham @10DowningStreet also seems rather nostalgic for the economics of the 1970s. Well, I remember the 1970s. I was serving in the Army during them. It was a disastrous period.
Britain ended up going cap in hand to the IMF for a bailout, followed by swingeing cuts in public spending. Under that Labour government, health spending actually fell in real terms in 1977–78 as part of those cuts. That is the lesson Labour should remember.
Labour are not in opposition anymore. They are in government. So stop telling people what you 'hope' to do and start taking responsibility for what you are doing.

🚨"Andy Burnham may seem to think everything went well in the 70s, I remember the 70s, it was a disastrous period"
Sir Iain Duncan Smith cautions Andy Burnham over his nostalgia for Labour in the 1970s saying only economic disaster is coming.
