Call for papers for GECCO 2026 Evolutionary Machine Learning (EML) track! The global search of evolutionary methods complements the local search process that typically underpins non-evolutionary ML methods.
Chaired by @DocUrbs and Will Browne.

Fun editorial where @KarenUPennHLP @DocUrbs and I got a chance to think through best practices to adopt ChatGPT-like apps in education. We believe it is not a matter of whether students will use it, but how. – at Topanga, CA

This very nice piece by Ted Chiang describes ChatGPT as a lossy compression of the Internet.
This idea is helpful for building intuition, but it's easy to miss an important point: Lossiness is not always a problem! In fact, if done right, it is exactly what we want.

Jet injectors were used for mass vaccination, and as an alternative to needle syringes. The devices used compressed air to deliver vaccines, forcing the liquid through the skin without a needle; the jet injector was widely hailed as "the peace gun."

Evaluation of many things is critical but to what extent are metrics used actually measuring what we want to measure? This is problematic as the measures we use often miss the primary point. Easy ones are used but often don't do job well. Read "The tyranny of metrics"
