You learn a lot about politicians from the quality of their opinions on “new issues” where there is no established party line from them to follow. It’s not surprising to me that Obama is way ahead of any current politician on AI policy but it is very noticeable
Obama on recursive self improvement and the risks associated with it. When he talks about the urgency for us all to have a say in how this technology evolves and how it is overseen, this is part of the reason why:
“The models are going to get smarter and smarter and better and better at a much faster pace, at an exponential pace.
What are the risks of that? There’s the big science fiction risk, wow, these models get smarter than us, and they decide humans are fine, but not necessary. They start setting their own goals, and the killer robots kill us, or we bow down to them.
I do not want to exaggerate that particular risk, but I will say there is a non-zero risk of non-zero chance of that happening, but that’s not actually the risk that I’m most concerned about, although it’s the risk that gets most attention.
And the reason that’s a risk is not because the computer models are conscious, necessarily. It doesn’t mean that they are necessarily feel malice towards humans. It’s just that if they start setting their own agendas, you may get a misalignment between what they want to do and what we want them to do, and that gap can be dangerous. That’s problem number one.
The more serious problem is these models are getting powerful enough that if they get in the hands of bad humans, they can do bad things. They can be weaponized in certain ways. They can do a lot of mischief.”

We’re partnering with @Anthropic to launch the biggest Protein Design Competition in the world, challenging people around the world to use AI to design new potential drug candidates for diseases that affect millions of lives.
The competition will feature five challenges, each focused on a specific disease or biological mechanism. Compared to previous competitions, it will be a big step-up in complexity and scale to push the boundaries of AI-driven protein design.
Together with Anthropic, we’re sponsoring over $1 million in experimental validation, making it possible to test more than 5,000 protein designs in our automated lab at no cost to participants. Anthropic is providing an additional $1 million in Claude credits.
All experimental results will be published openly on @Proteinbase, including designs that didn’t work, so anyone can access the data and build on what we learn.
The competition is open to everyone and free to enter. It will feature 3 tracks:
- Track 1 is aimed at expert protein designers, with up to 20 teams to be selected.
- Track 2 is targeting life science academics and industry researchers.
- Track 3 is open to everyone from tech enthusiasts to high-school students.
By combining Anthropic’s models with access to our automated lab, we want to make it possible for anyone with a laptop and an internet connection to join the global effort to advance human health with AI.
A big thanks to @Modal for contributing compute for protein design and to @TwistBioscience for contributing the DNA for the experimental validation!

This is increasingly the conservative fantasy. But let me suggest that this vision is the end of American civilization.
We build civilization so we don’t have to live like this. We live like this when civilization is extremely fragile, just barely working. And after the collapse, the inhabitants of these dwellings wills be hunkering down, hoping and praying that someone, somehow will turn on the lights to civilization. And re open Costco.
A nation of people living like this has poured all of their resources into hardened fortresses. That’s very different from a nation uses that same money to build safe parks, museums, libraries.
If we all start living like this video indicates, we will have money for nothing more and the decline will just accelerate.
Something for the AI fear mongers to consider:

“It doesn’t always have to be Tesla.”
That pretty much sums up this R2 review.
Electrive came away impressed with the R2 as a real Model Y alternative:
• More distinctive SUV design
• Excellent ride comfort
• Quiet cabin
• Strong off-road capability
• 330-mile / 531 km range
• 0–100 km/h in 3.6 sec
• Useful tech, OTA updates, and Rivian’s zonal architecture
They even said the R2 rides better than the Model Y, BMW iX3, Volvo EX60, and Mercedes GLC on rough roads.
The one clear weakness: charging. Around 200 kW peak is fine today, but could look pretty average by the time R2 reaches Europe in 2028.
Still, with the lower trims eventually bringing the starting price down to around $44,990, the R2 is shaping up as a seriously compelling alternative in a segment that badly needs something different.
You don’t have to buy a Model Y just because you want an EV SUV anymore.

The Vatican just hosted a real conference on AI consciousness by the International Center for Consciousness Studies (ICCS), exploring creativity and whether humans can form meaningful relationships with AI companions.
Not a side panel at a startup summit.
Philosophers and AI people at Casina Pio IV asking whether friendships, care, even romance with artificial companions make sense, and what that does to lonely people who already lean on chat systems at 2am.
Dmitry Volkov, founder of ICCS, put it cleanly: AI is like a fast car. Huge acceleration. You still need brakes or you hit the wall.
That tracks.
Companion bots soothe.
They also flatter.
He calls out sycophantic models that reward narcissism. Newer ones push back more. Still, the line between talking to a person and talking to a system is getting thin in public, not just in labs.
I do not think we have conscious AI yet. The studies are early.
But if the Vatican is asking whether humans can form genuine emotional bonds with software, the rest of us should stop treating that as a cute novelty feature.

My favorite AI joke:
Current models are getting close to PhD-level intelligence. After that, they're expected to achieve the intelligence of someone who decided not to do a PhD.

I love when Americans reach out to me to tell me, "you are too hard on Tesla and Elon Musk."
Elon Musk took a dump on American democracy by spending $250 million to elect a megalomaniac president who is now actively trying to hide the biggest human trafficking scandal of all time while letting the Epstein class loot the entire world economy.
And you decide to spend your energy criticizing a blogger who is "too hard" on the world's richest man? Please. Bring that energy to those who are actually negatively affecting your lives.
If you don't like my writing, you can simply not read. I'll have zero impact on your life. You can't say the same about Elon and Trump.

I completely agree with this take related to the “AI will create viruses that will kill us all” BS. But let me add my few cents, because I am really really angry!
I worked with one of the deadliest viruses in history, HIV, for two decades. I was one of the early scientists to engineer it, and engineered versions of HIV are now helping cancer patients. I understand the immune system that defends us against viruses extremely deeply. I have worked in high security biohazard labs.
I don’t have a PhD in AI, but I have been involved with AI since the early 90s and have been all in on AI for years.
People claiming that you can just make a virus in your garage, use AI to engineer it, and somehow build a virus that will kill everyone don’t know what the hell they are talking about!
Of course bioweapons are extremely dangerous. In fact, viruses and bacteria have killed more humans throughout history than almost anything else. HIV alone killed tens of millions of people, yet today, if you have access to effective medicines and take them properly, HIV is generally no longer a death sentence.
COVID-19 killed millions. Why doesn’t it kill at anything close to the same scale anymore? Not because the virus disappeared. It is still here. We developed collective defenses against it through our immune systems, prior exposure, vaccines, treatments, and better medical care.
And this is exactly the point.
The best way to fight biological threats, whether natural or synthetic, is to use AI to develop vaccines, treatments, antibodies, antivirals, and eventually engineer our immune system to create much stronger defenses against them.
By the way, it is already possible to make synthetic viruses. You don’t need some hypothetical superintelligent AI model to do that. We have had sophisticated molecular biology and genetic engineering for decades.
So how many people have actually died from synthetic viruses compared with natural viruses killing millions every year?
And if someday there really is an AI capable of making some unbelievable “supervirus,” then why the hell wouldn’t that same AI make it even easier to develop defenses against it?
Or cure diseases, for that matter?
Where is this damn superintelligence that has cured a single major disease?!
These AI companies and AI doomers keep talking like, “OMG, AI is going to become so unbelievably powerful that it could kill all of humanity!”
Then why is nobody asking the obvious question?
If your AI is already becoming this godlike, unbelievably powerful intelligence, why hasn’t it cured anything?
I mean ANYTHING.
Where is the cure for cancer?
Where is the cure for Alzheimer’s?
Where is the cure for aging?
Forget those. Where is the vaccine that prevents the common cold?
You are telling me this intelligence will soon be smart enough to engineer some magical virus capable of wiping out 8 billion people, defeating every immune system, every vaccine, every antiviral, every laboratory, every government, and the entire global biomedical community…
…but somehow it still can’t cure one disease?
I call that greatest intellectual dishonesty ever!
At least WE actually know how to cure things and save millions of lives with our supposedly stupid human intelligence compared with this future “superintelligence.”
Humans eradicated smallpox, which killed hundreds of millions of people throughout history.
We turned HIV from a almost certain death sentence into a manageable disease.
We developed vaccines in record time against COVID. If we had the same AI back then, would have saved millions more!
We engineer immune cells to kill cancer.
We developed antibiotics, antivirals, monoclonal antibodies, gene therapies, organ transplantation, and thousands of medicines.
We aren't fast enough but we did all of that with our ordinary human intelligence.
So imagine what actual superintelligence could do for medicine!
And here is the part that really makes me angry.
If you actually have, or are close to having, an AI capable of curing diseases and saving millions of lives, and you are deliberately slowing it down or refusing to make those capabilities available, then we also need to talk about the human cost of THAT decision, which you fearmongering people are going to be responsible for!
More than 150,000 people die every single day around the world.
Every. Single. Day. More than 90% from Cancer, heart disease, infections, aging. How many die because of AI? ZERO!
Talk about the people dying TODAY.
Talk about curing cancer.
Talk about stopping the next pandemic before it starts.
Talk about developing universal vaccines.
Talk about engineering our immune system so viruses become almost irrelevant.
Talk about curing genetic diseases.
Talk about reversing aging.
Talk about saving millions and eventually billions of lives.
Instead, we constantly hear this “AI WILL KILL US ALL!” crap, delivered with absolute certainty and with this smug smile on your faces in front of cameras, as though imagining a science fiction extinction scenarios.
I am actually angry about this. Each one of you causing a delay in AI advance every single day will be personally responsible for those 100 thousands deaths that could have been prevented!
Because if you truly believe intelligence is about to become this powerful, then the greatest question humanity should be asking is NOT:
“How could this intelligence hurt us?”
It should also be:
“WHY THE HELL AREN’T WE USING IT TO SAVE EVERYONE WE CAN?”
And if superintelligence really is coming, then make sure one of the first things we do with it is make humanity biologically damn near impossible to kill.
Well, I’d add one more with myself, as one with a PhD in biology and another PhD in AI and now working in both, to make n=2. Generating a hypothetical genome blueprint of a virus from LLM versus generating a true virus are completely different things. It is either an intentional attention-harnessing lie or true ignorance. The material, the manufacturing, and actual biological viability of paper-to-physical transformation is the gap you need to close. Like drawing a design of a chip or A-bomb, versus actually make one.
You have, and can add more checkpoints and guardrails all over this long chain of paper to physical transformation. Fear mongering is not well founded, and mostly emotional manipulation.

The last time the "we're all going to die" alarmists won was anti-nuclear energy movement, which cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of lives from the greater air pollution of burning fossil fuels for electricity.
Media foaming at the mouth, platforming and scaring the hell out of normies and older folks with these emotional panic and viral doomer narratives, without any nuanced debate grounded in facts and rational discussion of the nuanced reality, is typical. Shameful.
Where is the news judgment? Any pushback at all? Nah, forget that. Gotta get the views and hits, right?
