Naomi Lawrence-Reid's career looks different than originally expected, but she wouldn't have it any other way. As founder of @docdifferently, she teaches physicians how to build a flexible and fulfilling career outside of full-time clinical medicine. vist.ly/5ku7b

@DocDifferently this is why I do locums. Is it hard to be away from my family… Absolutely. But when I’m with my family, I’m 100% present.
Some of the happiest doctors I know are moms who do locums. They pick up 5-6 day assignments, negotiate sky-high rates, lock in at work, then come home and are fully present for their families for the rest of the month. They love it.

Hot take: Every hospital that says they "can't afford to pay physicians more" has an EVP of Patient Experience making $400K. The budget isn't a constraint. It's a series of choices about who gets paid first.

I rage-quit my academic pediatrician job in 2017 with lots of debt and no plan. Doctors don’t have to stay in jobs they hate. We can be successful everywhere.
I was featured in @Forbes for teaching doctors how to find new jobs and live good lives.

Nothing creates a part-time job like a full-time resignation. Submit your letter of resignation. They may coming running after you with a part-time offer. If not, find a part-time, per-diem, or locums position elsewhere. No one tells doctors when and where they have to work.

Want to go part-time? Inform your boss/med director/dept. chair of your decision. Do not ask. “I am informing you of my decision to reduce my clinical FTE to 0.75 beginning July 1” Denied? Told it’s “not possible” because of staffing shortages and patient access needs? ➡️➡️

I resigned from my first doctor job when I didn’t want to work there anymore. No other explanation is ever needed.

I will not be bullied into being an underpaid pediatrician. An understaffed department is not my problem.

Locums isn’t just for near-retirement docs. I began doing locums 3 years after residency and never looked back. -High negotiable rates -Flexible schedule -Clinical work -1099 tax write offs -Opportunities in every specialty 125K/yr to 515K/yr as a pediatrician in CA. Worth it

What residency taught me: Clinical pediatrics. What I taught myself: Negotiation, resignation, malpractice insurance, launching an Scorp, contract review, personal finance, finding locums, per-diem rates, expert witness, VA disability, aesthetics, and medical writing.

When you’ve been dragged on X for 48 hrs, but at least you’ve shown a few doctors not to accept low-ball, no-benefit salary offers.

I’ve spent the last 3 years as a full-time travel pediatrician + consultant/medical writer/expert witness/fractional med director. No med school or residency program taught me how to work this way. The best part? The freedom. The money. The living & working on my own damn terms
