Dec. 7, 1941: Outside of Pearl Harbor, the destroyer USS Ward, its crew primarily reservists from St. Paul, attacked and sank a Japanese midget submarine, the first shots fired on the date of infamy. The gun that fired those shots now stands on the grounds of the State Capitol.
