After Netanyahu has been trying to blame former Shin Bet head Ronen Bar for October 7, he has hit back with a defamation lawsuit. The revelations in it are fascinating: 1) Bar says that at his first meeting with Netanyahu, on November 7, 2022, he recommended killing Yahya Sinwar. He told Netanyahu that Sinwar was directing attacks from Gaza into the West Bank. The suit records no response. 2) On January 17, 2023, Netanyahu visited Shin Bet headquarters and ordered the agency to build "an equation with Hamas through non-aggressive means." Cooperation with Hamas was central to Israeli policy. 3) On February 13, 2023, Bar sent Netanyahu a personal letter warning of a "perfect storm." Netanyahu wrote back that the Shin Bet chief must use all means to protect elected officials. 4) In March 2023, Bar warned that Hamas was drawing encouragement from the judicial overhaul fight and that terror alerts had tripled. He recommended striking a senior figure in Gaza. The suit says the recommendation was never discussed. 5) On May 21, 2023, Bar presented intelligence that Sinwar was going through a "messianic" process and recommended widening targeted killings. Netanyahu reportedly said he feared the enemy would answer by targeting him personally. (Walla, Ynetnews) 6) On July 12, 2023, Bar recommended cutting Gazan work permits and hitting Hamas's financial backers. On July 26 he repeated both recommendations. The suit records no response to either. 7) On July 23, 2023, Bar told Netanyahu on a secure line: "I am passing you a strategic warning for war." He added that "we won't be able to give a day and hour" and called for a preemptive strike. According to Kadosh, Bar then briefed opposition leader Lapid with Netanyahu's approval. 8) In August 2023, Bar escalated his warnings. On August 20 he warned of a dangerous holiday season. On August 21 he warned of a "dramatic escalation" from Gaza. On August 22 he told the security cabinet that Hamas "was not deterred." 9) On September 12, 2023, Netanyahu ordered "aim for the quietest possible holiday period." As a result, the Shin Bet's September 21 recommendation for a preemptive strike was pushed to after the holidays. On September 27, Netanyahu said he did not want escalation with Gaza. 10) On October 1, 2023, a week before the attack, Bar warned that terror intentions had peaked and recommended killing senior Hamas figures. Netanyahu approved "advancing" the plan but set no timetable and never convened a meeting on it. 11) Bar says Netanyahu kept Qatari money flowing to Gaza over the Shin Bet's objections. According to the suit, the Shin Bet warned that money meant for civilians was funding tunnels and weapons. 12) On the night of the attack, the Shin Bet sent an alert to all security bodies at 3:03 a.m. Bar says his order to update Netanyahu's military secretary is logged in the Shin Bet situation room's computers from before the attack. Bar's suit describes 11 months of documented warnings and one consistent response: keep Gaza quiet. The lawsuit will serve as the closest thing to an official inquiry until there is one.
