Check out our latest paper on efficacy photoswitches that can locally light up opioid receptors, thus avoiding unwanted central and peripheral side effects (respiratory depression, constipation). Great collaboration with Levitz (Weill Cornell), @CorneliusGati (UCX) and @sevakat1 (USC)

Our AM-3 paper is out in Cell. Opioids are critical drugs, but have severe side effects. Because they are administered systemically, it is hard to dissect how they work, and to separate side effects. So we built one you can switch on and off with light. cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092…
I am thrilled about the Nobel Prize for Optogenetics. Congrats to Peter, Georg, and Karl! And I’m happy that the Nobel committee correctly portrayed the role Chemistry played in the development of this field: nobelprize.org/uploads/2026/…

Nuclear Receptors and Photopharmacology are a great match. Check out our latest work on glucocorticoid receptors, in a wonderful collaboration with the De Bosscher lab: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broadly defined area of organic chemistry. I have the honor of chairing the search committee.

Feeling down? Reviewer 3 was nasty? 13C-NMR doesn’t match? TLC shows an Autobahn? Tomorrow is another day. And our “Need Motivation” button is back! traunergroup.org
Amazing Lineup this Fall!
I've been dabbling a lot with @Claude coding and wanted to modernize the POCC website (again). In doing so we've added a ton of new features to the site and were able resurrect a lot of lost records. We've also added modern tools like calendar integration etc, go check it out!

Be sure to check out the new-and-improved POCC website for details about upcoming events, like next month's seminar, at pocclub.org!
Check out our preprint on “azostitching”, a one-pot synthesis of azobenzenes and azoheteroarenes from organoboron compounds and anilines. This modular method vastly expands the accessible chemical space of azo dyes and photoswitches, opening new possibilities for their exploration in materials science, chemical biology, and photopharmacology.

This is amazing work! Congrats to the team.
Excited to share that our AzoTag paper is now out in @NatureChemistry! 🥳
We demonstrate de novo chemo-optogenetics through the rational design of photoresponsive small molecules and selection of their artificial protein binding pairs.

Thelepogine!
Congratulations to Matt and Christoph on bringing this one home! I’m very fond of the final result.

Stephadiamine, take two. A second synthesis is justifiable if you (a) radically change the strategy and (b) develop new methodology along the way. Congratulations, Ana Vi, on bringing this one home! pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.102…
Exited to speak at NYU Pride today on Art and Organic Chemistry.
“Inspiration. She never visits the lazy.” — David Hockney
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratories of Professor Dirk Trauner (Department of Chemistry) and Professor Trevor Penning (Perelman School of Medicine) at the University of Pennsylvania.
Silyl protecting groups can function as dispersive directing groups , leading to unusual stereoselectivities! Collaborating with @bobbypaton, we have demonstrated this for a specific case. Stay tuned for a more systematic study!
