For the love of Dale: Do NOT ruin NASCAR! I’m going on a brief rant for the 13 of you who will actually see this. Bear with me. Americans have disagreed forever. Hell, disagreement is basically how we ended up with this country in the first place. And disagreement is GOOD. Healthy disagreement creates discussion. Discussion challenges ideas. Challenged ideas get better. Disagreement is kind of like fertilizer for society. The problem is, somewhere along the way, we stopped spreading fertilizer and started piling up bullshit. And apparently you CAN put too much manure on the crops. We’ve watched it happen in politics. People don’t just disagree anymore. If you believe something different, you must be stupid, evil, brainwashed or a terrible human being. And now I’m watching that same nonsense creep into my beloved NASCAR. Please. For the love of Dale. DO NOT RUIN NASCAR LIKE WE RUINED POLITICS. It’s okay to love your driver. It’s okay to hate my driver. It’s okay for me to think your driver couldn’t find the racing line with GPS and a spotter screaming directions into his ear. What’s NOT okay is deciding you hate me because I like somebody you don’t. Talk about it. Argue about it. Tell me why I’m wrong. Break out the SMT data and give me your Zapruder-film-level analysis proving your guy was absolutely NOT at fault. That’s NASCAR. But then listen when somebody explains why they see it differently. Sometimes you can just say: “Yeah, I still disagree.” And move on. Wild concept, I know. NASCAR has ALWAYS had polarizing drivers. People forget, or weren’t around to remember, that a LOT of fans hated Dale Earnhardt. The grandstands were packed with black No. 3 shirts, hats and flags. They were also packed with people who wanted literally anybody except Dale to win. Dale was loved. Dale was hated. And NASCAR was better because people cared enough to have an opinion. Kyle Busch? Same thing. Darrell Waltrip? Same thing. We’ve always had heroes and villains. Fans have always been passionate. But passionate doesn’t have to mean cruel. Love Carson Hocevar? Awesome. Wear the shirt. Buy the diecast. Support your guy. Tell everybody why you think they have him wrong. Hate Carson Hocevar? Also fine. Tell everybody why you can’t stand him. Boo him during driver intros. Cheer when your guy beats him. But you don’t need to attack his fans personally. You don’t need to try to ruin the kid’s life. And NASCAR doesn’t need to banish every driver to a remote island because Twitter got mad at him Sunday afternoon. It’s racing. I’ve been watching NASCAR for about 40 years. I grew up a Dale Earnhardt fan. My dad was a Jeff Gordon fan. Imagine that household in the 90s. We gave each other absolute hell. We argued. We laughed. We celebrated when our guy won and became mysteriously unavailable for conversation when the other guy won. But we never got actually angry at each other over it. Because THAT WAS THE FUN. After Dale died, I became a Jr. fan. When Jr. retired, Ryan Blaney became my guy. Almost 40 years watching this sport. Three main drivers. Blaney is my guy today. And you know what? I don’t hate Hocevar. Truthfully, I really like the kid. I like the personality. I like the edge. I like that people are talking about him. I like that NASCAR has drivers people actually CARE about again. You don’t have to agree with me. Actually, please don’t. That would be boring as hell. Give each other crap. Debate the wreck. Defend your driver. Boo the villain. Cheer the hero. Then laugh about it and watch the next race together. NASCAR is getting fun again. The racing is good. People are talking. Drivers have personalities. Fans are passionate. Let’s not screw that up by turning every disagreement into a character assassination. We already have politics for that. Let NASCAR be fun. And for God’s sake… stop putting so much bullshit on the crops. #NASCAR
