it's been 4 years since the release of "the queen's gambit", so let's have a look at the impact the show had:
- 62 million households watched the show in the first 28 days of its release, becoming netflix's most watched limited scripted series at the time, with the show ranking no. 1 in 63 countries and top 10 in 92 countries. nowadays, it is the 5th most viewed tv show on netflix with more than 112.8 million views.
- it won 11 emmys during the 2021 emmy awards, including "outstanding limited or anthology series."
- google searches of "how to play chess" peaked for the first time in nine years after the show premiered and sales of chess sets grew 125%.
- in october 2020, the search rank for "chess set" skyrocketed by 857% on amazon and continued to be up by 364% in the month after the show first streamed on netflix.
- eBay reported that the website saw a 273% surge in searches for chess sets over the first 10 days of the show being released on netflix.
- between january and june 2023, the show drew 45.9 million viewing hours despite being released in 2020 and not having a second season
