Think billions of horny teens. Last cicada-orgy, I was with Vera Rubin, pioneer of dark matter, as cicadas pummeled the screen door, and her slightly radioactive husband set off alarms at the White House. Cicadas will always remind me of brilliant, kind, fascinating, dear Vera.

I so enjoyed watching 50,000 or so migrating snow geese at #MontezumaWildlifeRefuge, a fabulous spot to behold tall, stately Sandhill Cranes, bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and lots of other winged beauties at the top of Lake Cayuga.

"Life is really a plural noun, a caravan of selves." --@DianeSAckerman. In Hebrew, life is literally a plural noun. Still, go reinvent your self, today's as good a day as any :)

This Snowy Owl is such a magnificent creature! Been visiting him regularly at a rural airport where he winters, just to quietly behold him. Yesterday, alas, he was gone, driven off by a mob of crows. I'm so hoping he'll forget their bother-squad and return. What a winged beauty!

Congratulations @brainpicker!! What a heartfull, gorgeous children's book! Can't wait to send a copy to a young friend. I love snails and their cupid-like "love darts," but one needn't, or even be a child, to relish this wise, timely, loving, and sumptuously-told story. 🐌🐌🐌
I have written a children's book. It is a true story — a love story, a science story, a story about the poetry of existence, about time and chance, genetics and gender, evolution and infinity, about diversity as nature’s wellspring of resilience and beauty brainpickings.org/2021/01/02…

I love "Smeyes!" Here are a few: "Coronials"-- generation conceived during pandemic. "Covideo"-- Zoom watching TV with a friend. "Blursday"-- The only correct answer to "What day is it?" "Doom-scrolling"-- Obsessively rereading bad news. "Before-time"-- Pre-pandemic days. More?
And so it begins... the great hunt (pandemic-style) for a gown worthy of the love and partnership of N & A. Just before snapping the photo, the youngsters shouted “smeyes!” which, I learned, means “smile with your eyes.” What other new words are emerging from the pandemic?

It's such a joy to join @brainpicker on Christmas, and have the chance to thank her for another year's uniquely inspiring reflections on life, books, nature, compassion, love. Wishing everyone a New Year filled with wonder, earth ecstasy and kind hearts.
For those of us who find the religious tint of these holidays oppressive and their consumerism ecologically depressing, a lovely alternative in the notion of being an "Earth ecstatic" – an ecologically minded spirituality of wonder without religion brainpickings.org/2020/12/23…

Farewell to dear, kind-hearted friend, Alison Lurie , who lived such a long and fascinating life. May we all be that intelligent, observant and full of life at 94. Also a treasured member of my local book group of 11 women, and dearly missed. nytimes.com/2020/12/03/books…

It’s all connected. #biodiversity
Interesting new research: After a deadly fungus wiped out frog populations in Costa Rica and Panama, malaria outbreaks surged in the '90s/'00s, since there were fewer amphibians to eat mosquitoes. Yet another reminder that biodiversity loss affects us too: news.agu.org/press-release/a…

Thinking about how many thresholds and degrees #happiness has, and also how fragile it can be. Spooning under a cozy comforter on a cold day, and it soars. A bit of vexing uncertainty in the news, and poof!

Very sad about Arecibo. #EndOfAnEra. But what an important and exciting odyssey! I'm feeling so grateful for its extraordinary mission.
The NSF plans to decommission the iconic Arecibo Radio Telescope after it sustained major damage. Next on #SciFriLive📻, researchers Michael Nolan, Edgard Rivera-Valentín, & journalist Nadia Drake share what this means for this important scientific icon. sciencefriday.com/segments/a…
