Sugar Shock: From ₹49 to ₹58/kg--And Now India May Import ! Sugar prices are squeezing Indian consumers. The average retail price was around ₹49/kg in late July; by August, Mumbai prices have surged to a record ₹58/kg--an increase of nearly 18% in weeks. Tightening stocks, festival demand and diversion of sugarcane towards ethanol are driving the rally. The government is now considering limited duty-free sugar imports, possibly up to 1 million tonnes, to cool prices before the festive season. Imports may bring short-term relief, but they also expose a deeper policy dilemma: more sugar for consumers or more cane for ethanol? With Diwali demand ahead, the government cannot afford to let sugar become the next food-inflation trigger. Barricades Down: A New Signal from Delhi to Islamabad India has removed the external security cordon, bollards and barricades outside Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi-three days after Pakistan dismantled similar barriers outside India’s mission in Islamabad. The move appears to be a calibrated, reciprocal signal amid already strained India-Pakistan ties. Importantly, this does not mean all security has been withdrawn from the diplomatic mission. The Indian Express reports that the talks are examining whether a lower blend could remain available for the legacy vehicle fleet. This is significant because E20 was pushed as part of India’s energy-security strategy, helping reduce crude imports and save foreign exchange. But the E10 debate exposes a larger policy question: should one fuel blend fit an entire vehicle fleet? A dual-track approach could protect older consumers while preserving India’s ethanol gains. Pakistan’s Airspace Wall: India Pays the Price Pakistan has extended its airspace ban on Indian aircraft until September 24, keeping a costly geopolitical barrier in place since the India-Pakistan tensions of 2025. Apollo Wins EasyJet After Castlelake Walks Away US private equity giant Apollo Global Management is set to acquire British low-cost carrier easyJet in a £5.7 billion deal after rival bidder Castlelake withdrew from the takeover race. The offer values easyJet at 715 pence a share, winning the backing of both the airline's board and founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, whose family owns a 15.3% stake. The deal ends a months-long bidding battle and marks one of Europe's biggest airline buyouts in recent years. Apollo says it will retain the easyJet brand, support its growth strategy and keep the founding family invested for the long term. Instead of challenging the country's largest airline on issues of public interest, most interviews appeared to focus on corporate messaging and future plans. Journalism is judged not by the access it enjoys, but by the questions it dares to ask. Monsoon Revival Brightens India's Kharif Outlook After one of the driest June months in over a decade, India's monsoon has staged a strong comeback. The nationwide rainfall deficit, which had touched nearly 40% at the end of June, has narrowed to around 16%, helping farmers accelerate kharif sowing. By July 24, crops had been sown across 78.7 million hectares, just 5% below last year's level. While rice, soybean, cotton and maize acreage remain slightly lower, the recovery has eased fears of a major crop setback. The challenge now is uneven rainfall, with parts of eastern India still facing moisture stress despite the broader improvement.
