It is a great historical injustice that you can't burn down the buildings of revolutionaries who've never built any.

Either the AI bubble will pop, which will create a Great Depression-level market crash.
Or the AI valuations will be justified, which only works if AI replaces a huge number of workers and we get massive unemployment.
Either way, we are headed towards a monumental crisis.

The Cornell case is funny because they had verbal consent with witnesses and written consent after the fact through text messages and that’s probably more proof of consent than any sexual encounter anyone has ever had yet half the country still thinks they’re rapists.

If you want to understand why there is this sudden, intense fascination with exploring ancient myths in our culture, you need to understand this:
We've gone through an intense "Age of Deconstruction." David Foster Wallace called it "patricidal" because it only knew to kill with critique what came before.
But when you kill the stories that created you, you lose the sense of shared identity and purpose that holds a people together.
So now, we are rummaging through our oldest myths looking for a story we can rebuild upon.

The Catholic Church teeing up to lead a Crusade against robots is incredible. Ephemeral entities like national governments thinking they’re on the team is so goofy. Events are happening now that will have 10,000 year consequences.

I’m convinced that very shortly in reaction to AI—if this is not already beginning—there will be a society-wide explosion of humanism, both in the sense of a revival of the recognition of the radical importance of humanity, and in the Renaissance sense of Studia Humanitatis—the study of humanity (through philosophy, history and literature), the most worthy (and complex) entity in the cosmos.
I don't particularly like the idea of introducing AI early to my kids. It just feels damaging. I believe that "education should recapitulate civilization" in that the brain most naturally makes sense of the universe the same way human civilization did. Moving through the same forms in miniature, with the most recent advances in technology last, as kinds of stages of development. Kind of like the old "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" - which yes, isn't literally true (but even human embryos do have a tail that shyly retreats).

Pope Leo XIV has just made one of the most interesting distinctions I have heard in the debate about artificial intelligence: a machine may be able to generate an image, but that does not mean it has made art in the human sense. Speaking to artists and cultural figures at the Vatican today, Leo argued that there is an “ontological difference, prior even to the aesthetic, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others.” The use of the word ontological is important here I think.
The Pope is not arguing that AI-generated images must necessarily be ugly, crude or obviously artificial. Quite the opposite problem is rapidly emerging. They can be extraordinarily beautiful. AI can produce an image in seconds which might once have required days of human labour, just as it can produce music, prose and increasingly convincing film. Pope Leo's point is that technical quality does not settle the question because something fundamentally different has taken place.
When Caravaggio painted The Calling of St Matthew, a human being had looked at darkness and light, sin and grace, bodies and faces, and attempted to communicate something he had perceived about reality.
When Bach composed the St Matthew Passion, the music emerged from a particular human consciousness, formed by faith, suffering, intellect, memory, craftsmanship and experience.
A machine experiences none of those things.
It can recognise patterns within an enormous inheritance of human creativity and generate something new from them with astonishing sophistication, but it has never stood before a sunset, buried somebody it loved, experienced shame, fallen in love, prayed, doubted, forgiven an enemy or wondered what happens when we die...and this leads into what I think was the most penetrating part of Leo's address. He warned that in the technological age “the great danger is no longer just censorship, but homogenisation; not merely imposed silence, but the noise that makes listening impossible.” That is very deep and well worth considering carefully.
We have a tendency to imagine the cultural danger of technology as somebody preventing us from speaking. The Pope identifies another possibility: that we become surrounded by such an enormous quantity of instantly generated content, tailored to what algorithms already know we like, that genuinely original human voices become increasingly difficult to hear. The problem would not be silence but saturation, it would be a culture filled with images, words and music which are technically accomplished, immediately consumable and endlessly reproducible, but increasingly detached from the mysterious encounter between one human consciousness and another.
This does not mean that we must become frightened of AI. Leo himself has repeatedly rejected that simplistic conclusion, writing in Magnifica Humanitas that technology is not inherently antagonistic to humanity and can serve genuine human flourishing. Perhaps it does require us to recover a distinction we are in danger of losing. Generating something and creating something may not ultimately mean the same thing & as machines become better at the first, we may finally be forced to think much more seriously about what is uniquely human about the second. vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/…

The only institution responding thoughtfully to AI is the 2000 year old Roman Imperial Church.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

I identified another one today: someone you know well sends you a message, with either a generous offer of their time, or a favour, or they tell you about something bad that's happened to them.
The desire to reply with the exact right wording, phrase , to let them know you understand how greatful/sympathetic you are is overwhelming, so I put it off, and off again..... But days later they now worry that I don't care at all 😔, the paradox is that I cared too much , about getting it "right"

On paper, I’m in my 50’s & it’s really confusing…
In my head, I’m 35.
At a concert, I’m 25
After 10pm, I’m 72.
Getting up off the floor, I’m 93.
When someone makes me mad, I’m 2
BUT-
When an 80’s song comes on,
I’m 17, drunk in a field, & my mom thinks I’m at a sleepover

how can you not believe in God when octopuses DREAM and otters have a favorite rock they carry around in a little SKIN POCKET and cows have BEST FRIENDS and bees are out there communicating the coordinates of flowers through INTERPRETIVE DANCE and they have REGIONAL DIALECTS??
cats are PURRING at frequencies associated with bone healing??? forests get absolutely incinerated and respond by growing FLOWERS??? dolphins literally invent NAMES for themselves and yell them across the ocean??? penguins are waddling around Antarctica looking for the PERFECT LITTLE ROCK to give their beloved???
CROWS REMEMBER YOUR FACE. THEY TELL OTHER CROWS ABOUT YOU. THEY TELL THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT YOU. YOU CAN HAVE GENERATIONAL BEEF WITH A BIRD.
goats have ACCENTS. rats GIGGLE when you tickle them. elephants mourn their dead. whales make SONGS and then OTHER WHALES LEARN THE SONG and suddenly everybody across the ocean is singing the new hit single.
monarch butterflies are born knowing how to fly thousands of miles to a place THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN. sea turtles hatch out of an egg, immediately sprint toward an OCEAN they have never seen, disappear into it for like THIRTY YEARS and then somehow come back to THE SAME BEACH???
birds can see COLORS THAT WE CANNOT SEE. there are colors happening RIGHT NOW that we don’t even get to know about.
there are sea slugs that eat algae and STEAL ITS CHLOROPLASTS and then are just like great thanks I’ll be PHOTOSYNTHESIZING NOW. there are mushrooms communicating underground. there are seeds sitting in the dirt for DECADES like no actually I will wait.
squirrels plant MILLIONS OF TREES because they simply cannot remember where they put their snacks.
A CATERPILLAR GOES INTO A LITTLE BAG, DISSOLVES MOST OF ITS BODY INTO ORGANIC SOUP, REARRANGES ITSELF, GROWS WINGS AND LEAVES.
and you’re telling me a tiny acorn knows how to become a 70-foot oak tree??? nobody tells it what to do??? it just has TREE INSTRUCTIONS INSIDE IT???
your body started as ONE CELL. ONE. and that cell divided itself into a brain that can think about its own existence and eyes that can look at stars and hands that can hold somebody else’s hands and a heart that runs on ELECTRICITY without you even asking it to???
the iron in your BLOOD was made inside a STAR.
I’M SORRY?????
we are walking around on a wet rock covered in bioluminescent oceans and singing whales and laughing rats and birds holding lifelong grudges and flowers exploding out of FIRE and somehow we’re supposed to act like this is a normal place to live?????????
how can you not believe in God when octopuses dream, otters have a favorite shell that they carry all their lives, cows have best friends, bees have different "dialects" of dance depending on the region, cats purr at a frequency that accelerates bone healing, the forest grows flowers first after a fire, dolphins give each other names and respond to them, penguins make proposals by giving each other the most beautiful pebble, crows will tell their children about you, goats have accents, rats giggle when you tickle them, sea slugs become powered by the sun just by green algae and squirrels plant millions of trees every year just by forgetting where they've buried their nuts!
