Back from a break to complete my Ph.D. in #SystemDynamics, a science using #simulations and #complexsystems theory to explore hard problems. My focus was on the violence and instability of non-state actors, links to papers in the quoted tweet from my blog.
Back from a break to finish my Ph.D. focused on violence and instability of non-state actors at @WPI. Looking forward to share as its relevant to both #RussiaUkraineWar and the recent #Buffalo terror attack. Here is a blueprint of my dissertation. Links to papers in the 🧵. /1

10 years researching public mass killings #terror contagions, the question I get asked the most is “What can we do to reduce the violence of #massshootings and #terrorism?" Here's an open-access peer-reviewed article answering that, so pls share incose.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…

Posted to SSRN as a working draft, considering the vocabulary we can use to conceptualize and construct models of problems in complex systems while maintaining an operational perspective on causality. Any article feedback is appreciated! Paper URL: dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4598…

Had a chance to join @ProfSteveKeen , @TyKeynes , @trendingcycles and @planksip on a livestream this weekend to discuss radicalization and state/non-state violence including #HamasIsraelWar . May be of interest to @systemdynamics_ and @incose_org .
Just finished great live stream with @ProfSteveKeen sharing research on violent radicalization and discussing the #HamasIsraelWar . Comment/share/DM for an author's copy. Livestream: youtu.be/mxIRbxW4MZg?t=826 Root Causes of Violent Radicalization: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Sharing our plenary presentation on #terror contagions #ISDC2023 at the @systemdynamics_ conference. Whether you've been following our work for years or just started, this is a good all-in-one video/Q&A on the terror contagion hypothesis. youtu.be/-XyXern1OFQ

Proud to finally be able to share this! Our team completed a competitive SBIR advanced research for the Marine Corps. We modeled complex civilian dynamics, both tangible and intangible, at scale with broad applications beyond military use cases. dialecticsims.com/dialectic-…

Wrong question: "Do #videogames cause violence?" Better question: "How does #extremism spread in #onlinecommunities formed around video games?" Discussed these questions last night at @JMU's XLABs sharing both my own and recent @UN_OCT research.

Got a chance to talk today @Cornell to engineering students on using #SystemDynamics and #SystemsEngineering to model and simulate sociotechnical dynamics of social identity, sentiment, and affiliation. Use cases of private and public sectors. Thanks, Professor Palmer!

Good article! The kind of coverage we're seeing in Nashville perpetuates terror contagion effects by boosting infamy/notoriety and spreading template methods. I'm trying to understand the motivation of the police release of videos this early in the cycle. 1/

If I'm being generous, I think the Nashville PD are trying to get ahead of Uvalde/Parkland criticisms by sharing the deets. If I'm being ungenerous it feels a bit like propaganda. Considering the officers did the right thing at risk to themselves...I'll choose to be generous. 2/

But whoever up the chain is authorizing these releases at this time doesn't seem to understand the nature of terror contagions and how they spread. /fin
