How population stratification makes environments look like genes. A short 🧵:

mfs acting like a genocide is only a genocide if it's already done and fully wiped everyone out. if you were at auschwitz on week 1, would you hesitate to call it a genocide like "nah those aren't serious numbers yet"

This account is a firehose of quantitative racism but it is worth re-iterating that: if a trait like skin color is caused by genes, and society determines outcomes based on skin color, then -- yes -- those outcomes will also be heritable. This is heritability 101!

How many stories and reports like this will it take for people to believe the IDF are killing even children indiscriminately.

The Lynn / global IQ data is one of the best barometers you can have that someone on here is trying to sell you racist bullshit. In addition to the garbage data collection Kareem outlines, Wicherts 2010 showed the studies were systematically cherry-picked.

UPDATE: a spokesperson from JP Morgan Chase told the @TexasObserver they fired the operator of a neo-Nazi X account who we identified as their employee.
"This person is no longer at the firm. We do not tolerate hate in any form and take incidents such as this very seriously."
NEW: X has become a hotbed of neo-Nazi content under Elon Musk. We identified the operators of four anonymous accounts that share racist, antisemitic, and neo-Nazi content. Three live in Texas. Musk has replied to two of them. One works for the Navy.

A short post about the recent (and not so recent) trend of interpreting heritability/variance components as if they tell us something about equitable policy in our society. They do not.

I wrote about the paucity of genetic evidence for very recent selective sweeps and the generally odd and sporadic nature of the ones we do see. A 🧵:

This is quite funny. Quite a good "ah, well, nevertheless". I think it's implausible that Nature's editorial standards are less reliable than Charles Murray's intuition.

Late Richard Lynn, the most famous Hereditarian, claimed that women never win Scrabble championships because they are not as smart as men. I asked him why white women's 5 IQ point deficit prevents them winning, but Africans' "30 point" deficit does not. No reply.
I cite him:🧵

Last week The Atlantic featured an article on the rising popularity of race/IQ science on the right (theatlantic.com/technology/a…). The obvious point that "intelligence is not like height" sparked an unusual amount of whinging. I wrote about how this is now more true than ever. 🧵

This is wrong, but there is a lot of confusion about why (thread)
Most people don't realize that interbreeding with other races means that strangers on the street from your own race are more related to you than your own child. Amplify this, @elonmusk and spread the knowledge!

"Eugenics has never worked primarily by producing more intelligent babies. Instead, it has worked by creating the illusion that intelligence is primarily genetic, absolving governments of responsibility for ameliorating social inequality."

I wrote about the study of Ritchie et al. 2015 which concluded that education influences specific skills but not a general factor of intelligence. Re-analysis of the same data shows that an influence directly on intelligence actually fits much better, a complete reversal.

Absolutely insane how Pink Floyd chose an AI generated video as the winner of their $100k animation competition over a hand crafted masterpiece such as this one by @TheInsaneum
Fuck AI
The winning video by Damián Gaume for Any Colour You Like in Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary Animation Video Competition.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The AI video cited won the competition for the song "Any Colour You Like", while the one posted by OP was participating for the song "Eclipse".
This video lost to another human made MV created using claymation and is now on the official Pink Floyd YouTube channel seen below.

In a previous thread I mentioned a neat result from Biddanda et al. [elifesciences.org/articles/6…] showing a pair of Yoruba individuals with more genetic differences than a Yoruba/French pair, consistent with a nested subsets model of human dispersion. Dr. (?) Khan raises a caveat:

And here is Flynn’s later admission that he was wrong on this point, offering “apologies to Lewontin” a decade after publishing his 1980 book
One of the endearing things about Jim Flynn was that he wrote one of the strongest passages about the difficulty of coming up with a plausible environmental X-factor (he acknowledged that simple racism didn't work). He died still unpersuaded, at least publicly, of a significant genetic role for explaining the B/W IQ difference, but he was not soft on his own position.
