When someone treats you terribly, they often expect you to strike back with similar like behavior, which in return justifies their bad behavior in their own mind.
I know! Crazy, Right?
This does happen more than we'd like to think.
However,
When you respond with unexpected kindness instead, you strip away their excuses and instead it creates a sharp, burning sense of shame and remorse, which forces them to confront their own cruelty.
So choose kindness even when someone chooses to harm you. Be the bigger person and dont give them that power over you. If you apply this kind of response into those type situations you will see how much of a weight will be lifted off of you. Remember how someone treats you is a reflection of how they feel about themselves.
Romans 12:20–21
"Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
