A1) For me, the biggest factor is the people who are part of that community.
How do they engage with each other? Whose voices are lifted up?
Are they similar enough to me that I'll feel accepted, but different enough that I'll be challenged & learn new things?

A1) In Odyssey we use multiple choice questions and fill in the blanks.
It would be cool to incorporate Parsons Problems too!

A1) I’ve taken a few MOOCs, and I enjoyed that it’s self-paced. It’s easier to spend more time on the confusing concepts.
One downside though is that it’s harder to get unstuck if you don’t understand the material as presented, since there’s no teacher to check up on you.

A3) I liked the tip about plotting concepts on a “time to master” vs. “usefulness once mastered” grid.
There are so many things we _could_ teach, so it’s helpful to have a system for prioritizing what will have the highest impact.

A3) Thinking of classroom teaching techniques as “an attempt to approach the effectiveness of individual tutoring at scale.”
It’s hard to create one lesson plan that meets the needs of dozens (if not hundreds) of unique learners. We’ll never be perfect, but we do our best.

A2) how much I prepare = how much time I have. 😬
I think what's most important to me is a) testing the actual code for pitfalls and then b) choosing what is MOST important.

A2: I probably over prepare. I spend a lot of time planning what I’ll teach but on the actual day I teach I tend to improvise and go with the flow of what I think the class/people need to learn #DevEdBookClub

A2) I tend to spend a lot of time lesson planning, to map out timings for the agenda and think through how I'm going to explain things.
I like laying everything out ahead of time, so that in the moment I can rely on my notes to keep me on track.

I love that!
This whole chapter made me think about the parallels between live coding and pair programming. As the instructor, you're like the senior engineer modeling for the new teammates how to solve a problem.

A1: Advice: know that you will mess up at some point and it’s ok and often a great teaching moment. The times I messed up and worked through the bug was usually the favorite part of the stream for most viewers. #DevEdBookClub

A1. I used to live code for 100+ students everyday and it was stressful 😅 I’ve also live coded on Twitch streams a few times. Those were less stressful because my cohost @nickytonline was always helpful and fun. #DevEdBookClub

Q2) "Misunderstanding immutability" was definitely a thing. It wasn't so much that I didn't get the concept, more so that I wrote code without regard for whether or not the methods I used were updating whatever I'd applied them to or creating an entirely new thing. #DevEdBookClub
