What do you want Michigan to look like in 2050: A state still full of highways and dependent on cars, or one where you can get around with dignity if you don't have a car?
Tell MDOT: We need to fund transit, biking, and walking, not more highways. detroittransit.org/mm2050-ac…

Wayne County transit millage passes, county says, ending opt outs freep.com/story/news/local/m…

Not a national story, but it's huge that Metro Detroit is about to have a fully unified transit system in the tri-counties for the first time in decades. No more suburban and exurban service opt-outs.
Next step: securing funding for rapid lines/BRT across the region.

Critics of the SMART millage will cite that buses have "3.9 riders on average" - where does that stat come from? Does it really measure the benefit that SMART provides? Hint: the answer comes down to, as it often does, density and land use. Member Jimmy McBroom explains below:

🎙️ “Detroit has never been just one thing.”
For Megan Owens, our July DPM Champion, that is part of what makes the city work. She believes Detroit is stronger when people can choose how they get around and how they connect to different parts of the city.
One of Megan’s favorite People Mover memories started with her daughter, who called it the “up-high train” when she was in preschool at the downtown YMCA. They would ride together, look out over the Detroit River and make a small adventure out of the curve near the convention center.
The People Mover also reminds Megan of her dad. In the 1980s, he took the train from Ann Arbor to work in downtown Detroit and brought her to Tigers games during the 1984 season. She imagines he would be amazed to see how much Downtown has grown.
📍 Hop on the Detroit People Mover and see the city through Megan’s eyes, where transit connects daily life, family history and the neighborhoods that make Detroit feel alive.
A big thank you to Megan Owens and Transportation Riders United for continuing to advocate for stronger, more accessible public transit across Greater Detroit.

For more than two decades, Megan Owens has helped Greater Detroit imagine what better public transit can make possible.
As Executive Director of Transportation Riders United, she has built her work around a clear belief. People deserve reliable ways to move through the region, with or without a car.
Megan’s advocacy has helped educate the public, strengthen support for regional transit and keep riders at the center of transportation conversations in Michigan.
Her work reflects the same purpose that guides the Detroit People Mover every day. Transit should connect people to opportunity, make cities easier to navigate and help communities move forward together.
We’re proud to recognize Megan Owens as our July DPM Champion. 💜
Stay tuned as we share more about Megan’s Detroit story and her vision for a more connected future.
