Reading books gave rappers a much wider vocabulary, knowledge of science, religion, politics etc etc. You can tell by what many of them were talking about in their teens/early 20's, you can tell by the raps they wrote, words they used. Many were ahead of their time.

Think Vol. 1 is so compelling b/c it's Jay-Z consciously deciding to try to be a rap star. He got 1 foot out. Easily the hardest balancing act of his career; it's anxious, uneasy and...human. RD he's a hustler making an album. Easy. Vol. 2 he had the formula figured out. Cool.
