As GroK noted for me, the U.S. trade deficit in February 2025 included a trade in services surplus of $25.4 billion because since the tariffs inherent to the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Act, the US has shifted heavily to services from goods. @paulkrugman
Why are we focused mainly only on trade in goods? If this trade war was launched on the back of a balance of payments deficit in the United States, we must also look at trade in services. And in this way, we must ask why a trade deficit nation like the U.S. would do a trade war.
Watching President Trump dispense with two major canards: The Biden Presidency did NOT lose 100,000 manufacturing jobs in December 2024. The highest loss of manufacturing jobs was less than 87,000 in 2009. And the U.S. has, by far, the largest FDI of up to US$ 8 trillion by 2024.
