New blog post by @DenizDutton, a #ClimateSmartScholars working with @CynthKallenbach at McGill! 👀
Last summer, Deniz, interested in soil microbes, did her internship at @UNBiodiversity where she contributed to research on biodiversity monitoring.

The HP lab @EEES_Dartmouth has a new paper in @GlobalChangeBio on how 🍄mycorrhizal associations of 🌱seedlings influence rhizodeposition (IT DOES) and whether that rhizodeposition affects soil C storage (IT DOES NOT): doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17446

Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay!
But the news isn’t so happy when it comes to our planet. Ecosystems are at risk around the world.
The good news is that everyone can part of #GenerationRestoration and make a difference today & every day: worldenvironmentday.global/g…

🌍 On #BiodiversityDay let's unite for the health of our land.
Poor land management jeopardizes soil biodiversity as well as our #foodsystems and drives the global #BiodiversityCrisis.
Large-scale restoration efforts are needed to secure the future of our planet 🌿 #UNited4Land
New blog post out now about regenerative agriculture practices and their consequences! Thank you for reading 🤗

Finally Washington is acknowledging the hypocrisy of developing LNG. Maybe the Dubai agreement finally gave leaders the courage to stand up to fossil fuel interests. Whatever the reason, we need more where this came from please

My new article about the Canadian Federal Greenhouse Gas Offset Program and other carbon pricing programs is out now on Medium!

Have you ever wondered how carbon offsets work? How they are different from cap and trade systems? Feeling discouraged that the world’s major polluting nations don’t seem to be doing enough to fight climate change?

New paper: Large Woody Debris in lakes stores large amounts of carbon for centuries to millennia. We show that this carbon sink is poorly quantified and under-appreciated, yet represents an important Natural Climate Solution. @GundInstitute @UVM_RSENR onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
These warm temperatures and level of rainfall are not normal for this time of year in Vermont, and are probably induced by climate change. This is the kind of “rain on snow” event scientists are most concerned about. iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
In several areas across the state, the weather set new records for temperature and rainfall. #vtflood23 #vtwx buff.ly/3GRCwbg
The result is massive loss of soil and leaching of nutrients into streams and lakes, leaving less for the plants to use in the spring.
The water may subside but severely disrupted nutrient flows are the legacy. Are there any researchers taking advantage of the event to measure N and P flux? @GundInstitute @ecadair

It might be the time to remind all that ~90% of current CO2 emissions are due to fossil fuel burning.

We need #COP28 to deliver a phase out of fossil fuels. Don't we want a phase out of the climate crisis?
Amazing finds! I am studying the role of soil microbial beta diversity in the resilience of crop cultivars to global change, but AMF have always interested me in particular. Thanks for sharing!
Replying to @mrillig
We find that for each factor of global change examined here, plants with AMF outperform plants without their symbionts.
This means AMF are likely important in plant responses to ongoing and future global change.

What we must do immediately:
1) End the use of fossil fuels
2) Build massive amounts of solar & wind
3) Electrify everything
4) Localize
5) Conserve
5) Find solutions for the last hard stuff (planes, cement)
6) Stop cutting down forests
