Once a year, write down your personal balance sheet. It takes 20 minutes.
ASSETS: cash and savings, money market funds, stocks (NGX and US), pension (RSA), property at a realistic value.
LIABILITIES: loans and loan apps, instalment debts, money borrowed from family.
NET WORTH = assets minus liabilities.
Track it every quarter. It tells you more than your salary ever will.
You can earn ₦1 million a month and have a negative net worth. You can earn ₦200,000 and be growing yours steadily.

Loan companies don’t need every borrower to repay. They need enough borrowers to repay, and they need to manage the resulting losses well enough to remain profitable.
Lending is a business of pricing and managing risk. They’re not betting that everyone will repay, they already know some people won’t pay, so they have to do something about that - steep interests.
They charge steep interests, allowing them to earn more than the amount originally lent. However, interest income is only profitable when it is sufficient to cover defaults and other costs. For that reason, they set interest rates pricing in the risk of nonpayment in mind so the interest earned from borrowers who repay helps offset losses from those who do not. From their latest financial disclosure, it looks like they’re managing it pretty well.

Today I turn 43.
My first salary was ₦60,000 a month. I lived on half and invested for my future.
Over 20 years later, my portfolio can fund my family’s lifestyle if needed.
To the young person making financial projections and wondering, “Can this really happen?”
Let me share my journey. A thread…

Your brain will never believe you can do hard things until you do them and survive.
That’s how confidence is built. Not by talking. By evidence.

In corporate, never say an outcome is impossible. With the right resources, grit, and investment, anything is possible.
Except when it borders on integrity and legal boundaries, don’t be the one pushing the message of impossibility; otherwise, you get sidelined.
