40 years since making The Color of Money.
I had the privilege as a young artist, to have a general meeting with Paul Newman and separately with Martin Scorsese years before making this film, where they shared some of their wisdom on cinema.
Of course, I’d seen their films, but prior to meeting them for the first time, I set up a personal study course where I would watch their films in sequence from the beginning of their careers, up until that point in time.
After being cast in The Color of Money, I once again studied all of their films in sequence.
Having studied their work, then being able to see firsthand these incredible artists, the towering legends of our field, at work on set, I was able to observe their practical application in every aspect of acting and filmmaking from their point of view.
I will always be grateful for this opportunity and for the generosity that Newman and Scorsese showed me with their knowledge of cinema and insight throughout the entire process.
To Marty, Paul, and the enormously talented cast and crew, it was a pleasure and an honor to be part of this film with you all! I have carried this experience and knowledge with me my entire career.

Few actors can match the combination of filmography, performances, and longevity Robert De Niro has brought to cinema.
Two Academy Awards, nine Oscar nominations, and one of the greatest runs any actor has ever had.
From The Godfather Part II and Taxi Driver to Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Heat, and Casino, De Niro delivered some of the most iconic performances ever put on screen.
Everything about this scene is perfect. The acting, the music, hell Newman never says a word yet says so much. Perfection

William Friedkin’s The French Connection turns 55 today. One of the greatest neo noir crime thrillers ever made. Gene Hackman gives an unforgettable performance as Popeye Doyle, and the incredible car chase is still the best ever put to screen.
Ben Affleck lost both of his parents this year. He says he learned “a great lesson” from how his mother navigated the end of her life:
“One of the things you grapple with at my age when parents die is there’s a comfort and awareness in knowing this is how it’s supposed to go. When I go, it will be hard for my children, but none of us want it any other way.
My mom said to me at the end of her life, ‘God, I thought 84 years would seem longer.’ And I thought, ‘I bet, because I thought 54 would seem longer.’
That’s what we get. We get this much time, and it’s a reminder not to put anything off or fix it later. It’s more about how you show up every day with everybody else.”

Ben Affleck argues Hollywood creators can’t make anything “actually special” without being willing to take “home run swings”:
“If you’re not willing to take a risk and try stuff, you will consign yourself to doing things people have seen before and kind of expect. That’s a worse and less interesting form of failure, in my opinion.”
Defending director Martin Brest’s “Gigli,” the 2003 film he starred in with Jennifer Lopez, Affleck added: “I love Marty, and he's a good director. And that's the interesting paradox in this job: you can be really good and still miss.”

Ben Affleck says he’d “be a terrible influencer” and doesn’t think actors need to be on social media:
“I got banned from Instagram twice for impersonating myself. I had six followers. It was my kids and some of their friends. It was just an excuse for me to look at [my kids’] social media accounts. There used to be a time when everything you said or did wasn’t on the permanent record. As you get older, you become aware of what that means. I experienced the whole world and had a whole life in private. I have a real sense of how valuable that is. I think Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep and Viola Davis and Denzel Washington are brilliant actors. It doesn’t help me appreciate their movies to see what they had for lunch. I realize I sound like an old, out-of-touch person, but I believe that as an actor you have to maintain an illusion.”

If you grew up in my era, you didn’t skip the HBO movie opener. You watched that little neighborhood come alive, blasted into space, and somehow knew whatever came next was going to be GOOD.
That music still hits.
