We are dedicated to creating a city that enables all Chicagoans to live prosperous, healthy lives and an equitable, reliable energy system is critical to that vision. That's why we need to #DemocratizeComEd.

For over a hundred years, Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) has delivered Chicago its electricity. For only the second time since 1948, the contract governing that relationship, the franchise agreement, is due to be renegotiated. southsideweekly.com/as-comed…

The DTE outage tonight in Ann Arbor is outrageous. For many Ann Arborites this is the third outage this month. Meanwhile in the same storm conditions Lansing's public power utility is reporting no outages. The difference is clear, public power means more reliable power

The THIRD canvassing crew just today! Great to see my ⁦@ChicagoDSA⁩ and ⁦@DemComEd⁩ friends! Chicago deserves a utility committed to the needs of our city rather than its shareholders. Let’s win the equity and transparency we deserve!

This seems to follow pretty clearly from the logic of the parking meter deal, too.
Replying to @DemComEd
@LoriLightfoot wants to kneecap the ability of the next city council and the next mayor (whoever they may be) to take bold action for climate, for the people, and against corrupt utilities with a 5-year ban on democratizing our utility. This election month ploy cannot stand.

The #InflationReductionAct’s passage was a positive but delayed step for the US to take climate investment seriously. There are lots of funding opportunities available, including some only for publicly-owned utilities. Chicago is not eligible for that cash due to @ComEd! 💸❌

We dispute @SkylerLarrimore’s and @chicagosmayor’s claims that a hasty Franchise Agreement now is the only way to make the city eligible for IRA investment. City council could municipalize today and be eligible for MORE federal funding, not less!

ComEd’s own warnings about avoiding energy bill scams tell ratepayers to watch out. A hallmark of scams is false urgency (“buy these gift cards now to avoid a shutoff”). So why should we trust them when they urge the same rush to jump into a long term contract now?

And if you are on the far north side, come out and knock some doors for @ClayFor46! Angela is running on a platform of re-establishing the Department of Environment, replacing our city's lead pipes and working to achieve 100% zero carbon energy by 2030. actionnetwork.org/events/eco…

Speaking of people who don't just talk about environmental issues but truly take action, @oscarfor10 put his body on the line to prevent a metal shredder from being relocated to his neighborhood. Sign up to help us elect Oscar here: actionnetwork.org/events/eco…

Later on we'll talk about the settlements and negotiations, but for now let's skip ahead to our recommendations. We make six.

Finally, I'm deeply troubled that a public speaker who criticized this deal was forcibly removed from this week's City Council meeting - despite causing no disruption. Chicagoans deserve much more transparency, input, and accountability from their government. (8)

The tentative agreement includes a 5-year moratorium on the City’s ability to municipalize. The current agreement contains no such provision. Why would we agree to this now? (7)
