I am starting a series to demystify some of the recent events in the Russo-Ukrainian war that have become shrouded by intense communication battles. The goal is to examine the bigger picture with a data-driven strategic perspective.
It is important to take a step back and gain a rational view on possible outcomes instead of relying on wishful thinking or overstatements.
The war has entered the last chapter of its current phase. Level-headed analysis is crucial to follow the unfolding events.

This provides a clear picture of the deterioration of bilateral relations.
Putin dismissed Russia’s ambassadors to Britain and France on consecutive days. The Kremlin says it is in no hurry to name replacements, citing what spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the “absence of bilateral relations” with both countries. meduza.io/en/news/2026/09/25…
There is fierce "skirmish" infantry fighting ongoing across the Lyman-Sloviansk front, mostly within the grey zone.
The AFU likely launched a clearing operation to relieve pressure on Mykolaivka, whose fall and consolidation by formed russian units would have made the defense of Sloviansk more complicated going forward.
This entire operation #Vivaldi appears to be Ukraine's 2026 equivalent of Kursk in 2024, and the timing is similar as well. The question remains, how will it turn out?
I will wait for the fog of war to clear before analyzing the situation in details.
#UkraineRussiaWar
Russian forces, as we speak, are carrying out emergency counterattacks trying to reverse the deteriorating situation south of the Siverskyy Donets river, east of Mykolaivka.
The situation is extremely confusing and complex. The Russian assault groups scrambled to this area have likely reentered Starodubivka and approached Mykolaivka again.
Russian infiltrators are also trying to get behind Ukrainian lines that they believe to be poorly consolidated east of Lyman.
Things are about to get extremely intriguing....

I can't help but express only careful optimism about the colossal Ukrainian gains.
Russian army group Zapad is experiencing huge issues, sure. Russia may need to mobilise again as their own front becomes thinner, sure. I think there is a reasonable chance they do so.
But a few considerations: Ukraine have committed significant manpower to Lyman for nearly 6 months now, with counterattacks first beginning at Ridkodub and Zelena Dolyna. Now, although the rapid advance from Mykolaivka to Ray-Oleksandrivka and Kalenyky seems like it was a blitz, this has occured as a result of 1-2 weeks of offensive actions.
Ukraine is conducting this without significant aerial support, and the previous counterattacks leading up to this point were affected by the exact opposite, with Sentinel imagery showing huge concentrations of Russian glide bomb strikes on the attacking Ukrainians around Lyman for months on end.
Yet, Ukraine is also counterattacking north of Kupyansk, in south Donetsk oblast near Komar, has redeployed units to Orikhiv direction, and is holding almost the whole front steady right now.
What do we know about attrition? It is a measure of the strategic balance, not necessarily tactical developments and especially not frontline gains. A country can be winning a war of attrition whilst losing ground, or vice versa.
All the indications point to Russia having a huge attritional advantage. 5x the population, Vehicle losses, glide bomb strikes, domestic production of instruments of attrition like artillery, MLRS and FPV drones. Russia still recruits in excess of 20-30k per month through financial incentives. Ukraine relies entirely on forced conscription, which has been ramping up. Even the Polish PM, who has an incentive to lie in favour of Ukraine, admitted that losses for Ukraine recently are 27k killed and wounded per month.
Absolutely everything points toward the fact that this isn't an inversion of the strategic, holistic direction of the war.
What can we learn from history? Well, in World War 1, as the German Empire was beginning to suffer catastrophic manpower and equipment shortages relative to the Western Allies, general Erich Von Ludendorff decided to launch a desperate offensive, throwing everything they had left at the Western Allies prior to the arrival of US forces on the front. This became known as the Ludendorff offensive, and German "stormtroopers" made substantial gains before being eventually absorbed as the Allies methodically fell back. Eventully, the Germans ran out of steam, and the front began rapidly rolling back right toward Germany itself. Germany surrendered before the Allies stepped foot on their home territory.
Warfare has changed alot, but the fundamental principles of attrition haven't. Ukraine is unable to fight asymetrically and conduct an elastic defence due to political constraints. The AFU is being worn down faster than Russia can be.
The question is, where is it all coming from for Ukraine? How are they able to conduct these offensives, despite the very decisive attrition that has already been inflicted upon them and is continuing to be so?
The AFU is an extremely brave and professional fighting force. They, on paper, have alot of manpower left, they could lower mobilisation age to 23, 21, 18, and could likely continue holding the front.
But, lets go back to the lessons from history. The Imperial German Army collapsed long before they physically ran out of manpower entirely. They collapsed when the overall long-term built up attrition since 1914 that had been supressed, all came at once. Attrition is abstract and extremely complex. Its alot more than just one number or a couple of equations.
I'd like to quote WillyOAM, a former Australian soldier who has spent time in Ukraine and has extensive, extensive knowledge on warfare.
As he sat in a high-rise building in Kramatorsk in May 2022, he said "This war is always on the eve of ending. It could be tommorow, it could be in 5 years".
Attrition is in some ways a mysterious force, and we could wake up in 2 weeks to find Russian armoured columns rolling down highways toward Kyiv. We could also wake up on a random Sunday in 2034 to see that the case. We simply have too many unknown variables to predict when a collapse will occur.
One thing i can say with some certainty: With Russia likely to conduct more border incursions, including into Chernihiv, something will give way eventually. Potentially extremely dramatically, or subtly spread across the whole front. Look what happened when Russia launched their Kharkiv incursion: Russia swept through Hirnyk, Novohrodivka, Kurakhove, and Selydove due to Ukraine being stretched thin.
But the point of this post is that we need to keep in mind at all times the overall, holistic trajectory of the war.

No surprises: the share of traffic hit on the land bridge highway is marginal and would require another order of magnitude to affect military operations and Crimean peninsula supplies.
500 trucks hit a month is 0.44% of freight traffic on this axis, as calculated in the earlier analysis in reply.

Daily Ukraine map thread for Tuesday 22nd September 2026
A focus on the midstrike campaign by zooming in on the road near Berdiansk upon which much of the supply goes now with Crimea being heavily interdicted. These drone strikes still continue but just doesn't get much attention due to a lack of footage being released. As seen below from some of the satellite options, we can often see strikes occurring but we cannot always determine what they are.
One thing, however, is clear from the footage we do see - If Ukraine intends to impose a true significant disruption upon Russian logistics, the scale of its campaign will need to increase by more than an order of magnitude. There is an extraordinary quantity of traffic to be interrupted
Russian strikes continue to have a focus on fuel, warehouses, trains and shopping centers across Ukrainian cities.
On the front, Ukraine continue to release footage from the Vivaldi operation north of Lyman, showing positions taken many weeks ago, and prisoners captured. On our side, we've added in a fair bit more information on the unit cards in that area which you can see on the map.

Must read by @Thorkill65 about the ludicrous claims that the Russian General Staff (or Ukrainian one for that matters) plan course of actions by reading OSINT milbloggers.
I also debunked it yesterday in my Lyman sector analysis.
Został on następnie powielony przez portal Hromadske.
W Polsce dokładnie ten sam pomysł i narrację powiela kanał Kremlinka.
Poniżej przykładowe tytuły ostatnich podcastów na kanale Nacke’a:
Spirala śmierci”. Brak benzyny, gnijące zboże, sparaliżowane Wildberries
Katastrofa paliwowa / Nadciągają sankcje / Ofensywa SZU trwa / Regionom brakuje pieniędzy
USA przyparły Putina do muru / Rekordowe ceny benzyny / Zniszczone 3 samoloty i śmigłowce / Pociski uderzają w Rosję
KATASTROFA PSZENICZNA / WYMARŁY KRYM / LUDZIE WYPŁACAJĄ PIENIĄDZE Z BANKÓW / FAŁSZYWE PKB
Tyle w kwestii wiarygodności i bezstronności Nacke’a. Przejdźmy teraz do tezy, jakoby gen. Gierasimow nie wiedział o ukraińskiej ofensywie w rejonie Łymanu.
Fakty:
Obie należą do GW „Zachód”.

Earlier short analysis of the strikes and counter measures:
What use are mobile air defense teams against the Ukrainian mid-range campaign on Russian logistics across the land bridge?
Often misunderstood, it can be summarised as follows:
1. They turned this theatre into a battlefield again. It is no longer about drones striking undefended trucks, but a military engagement between crews on technicals and drones.
2. Efficiency: Footage shows successful interceptions, though the main proof of effectiveness is the growing amount of strikes on those technicals. Why waste a drone if there are little chance of takedown, when trucks remain available? In most cases the vehicle is destroyed but the crew escapes, so casualties are limited.
3. Shift of economics: A fully loaded 25 kL fuel tanker costs at least twice an aged technical, not factoring the operational cost of trucks hit in large volumes.
This is less about the hit rate such crews obtain than the crucial shift in engagement conditions along those roads at the operational level.
Latest OSINT statistics show the number of trucks targeted has at best stagnated, with signs of decrease, signalling the mitigation measures are having an impact.
Based on the footage I have seen, numbers are also likely inflated.
Even then, the baseline of ~500 trucks hit a month as stated, represents 0.44% of freight traffic on this axis, along which 3800 trucks passed every day until may. As an order of magnitude this corresponds to 1 truck hit every 228 passages. Hence the lack of impact on russian military operations.
Now that being said, the situation would have deteriorated rapidly if no measure had been taken.
Deploying mobile air defense crews is less about their individual ability to shoot down drones, than the shift of battlefield conditions they created.

What must be kept in mind is the repeated sabotage against industries producing arms and munitions for Ukraine 🇪🇺🇺🇦
In reality, the Russian 🇷🇺 strategy involves ramping up pressure against aid to Ukraine through several means:
▫️ Supporting political parties opposed to aid for Ukraine
▫️Targeted assassinations and threats against defense industry figures
▫️Sabotage of military factories
▫️Attacks on transport infrastructure (trains and aircrafts)
▫️Attacks on energy production and transfers.
These are the priority areas for Russian intelligence. In my view, we should expect a proliferation of "Spider Web"-style operations in the coming weeks and months.

At operational level, this development creates a situation way more concerning for Kramatorsk-Sloviansk than the salient north of Lyman ever was. It benefits from a more robust logistical situation, is located on the ridge just above the city, across the defensive line, and threatens several logistical lines into Kramatorsk.
Sytuacja w rejonie Andrijiwki (Kramatorsk).
Andrijiwka - duża wieś położona mniej więcej pośrodku drogi: Dobropole - Kramatorsk to obecnie jedno z najgorętszych miejsc w Donbasie.
