A U.S. startup got cleared to sell sunlight after dark.
Reflect Orbital received FCC approval earlier this year for its first satellite, Eärendil-1, built to bounce sunlight back down to Earth. The company says the glow will match a full moon.
The satellite unfolds a 60-foot mirror about 400 miles up and aims the reflected light at a patch of ground roughly 3 miles wide.
The plan doesn’t stop at one. Reflect Orbital’s roadmap runs from 2 satellites in 2026 to 36 in 2027, 1,000 by 2028, 5,000 by 2030, and more than 50,000 by 2035.
At full scale, the company claims it can deliver daylight-level brightness for hours at a time, on demand, anywhere in the world.
