In his book Baltic: The Future of Europe, Oliver Moody makes the case that the innovation and resilience displayed by the countries bordering the Baltic Sea have a lot to teach those of us further west

The battered tombs of great worthies of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, in the Bernardine Church in Vilnius; one belongs to Stanisław ‘the Pious’ Radziwiłł (d. 1599), a son of Mikołaj ‘the Black’ who became a Catholic - a marker of the passing of Protestant Lithuania

Today in Bari, I unveiled a memorial relief dedicated to Bona Sforza – a remarkable figure who connects Lithuania and Italy.
As Grand Duchess of Lithuania, she played an important role in my country in the 16th century, advancing Renaissance culture, state governance, and economic development.
Our historic ties are a strong foundation for building an even closer partnership between Lithuania and Italy today.

With almost all votes counted, Latvians have given a rare landslide to the United List of Andris Kulbergs.
Of most interest to international followers:
Kulbergs is very pro-Ukraine, pro-NATO, pro-Europe. He’s clear that Ukraine must win, not merely survive, and that Europe must step up to ensure its security. The government has already committed Latvia to spending at least 5% of GDP on defence, while deepening defence cooperation with Ukraine to ensure it is spent on more of the right stuff.
The former automotive executive only entered Latvia’s Saeima (parliament) at the last election and became PM just four months ago. He has now secured the largest vote share since the restoration of independence.

What happened to class, labor and inequality after the fall of the Soviet Union?
My new book revisits Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania’s transitions — from Soviet rule and the 1991 revolutions to neoliberal restructuring and the rise of the far right in times of war.

This was a difference between the Crown of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; literary Polish took off in Poland, but in Lithuania Latin remained the most popular literary language until the c18th - even though most of the people writing it spoke Polish as their vernacular
Mikołaj Rej died on this day in 1569, having spent his career on a genuinely radical idea for the time:
He wrote exclusively in Polish, not Latin.
Rej's remembered as the father of Polish literature for that stubbornness. Somebody had to go first, after all 📜
