Uganda’s Independence Is Incomplete Without Financial Independence By Dr. Atwine Deborah, Managing Director, DEED Microfinance Ltd Today, as Uganda celebrates political independence, we honour those who secured our freedom and everyone working to build our nation. But we must also ask: How independent are we if we cannot sustainably finance our own future? Political independence gave us the right to govern ourselves. Financial independence gives us the ability to turn that freedom into better lives. For a household, this means affording food, education and healthcare, and managing emergencies without falling into repeated debt. For a business, it means earning enough to pay workers, meet obligations and grow. For our country, it means financing essential services and national priorities without excessive dependence on external support. A financially stronger Uganda begins with stronger households and businesses. As Managing Director of DEED Microfinance, I believe our responsibility goes beyond providing loans. Credit should help people improve their incomes, strengthen businesses and build assets. It must come with responsible lending, financial education and honest advice. We cannot borrow our way into lasting prosperity without improving our ability to produce and earn. We must support farmers and entrepreneurs, develop practical skills, improve infrastructure and markets, and add value to what we produce. As individuals and businesses, we must also plan, save where possible, keep proper records and borrow with a clear repayment plan. Yet personal discipline needs support from fair opportunities, reliable public services and accountable institutions. Government, financial institutions, businesses and citizens all have a part to play. Financial independence does not mean shutting out the world. It means working with others from a position of strength and making choices we can sustain. As we raise our flag today, let us commit to building an economy that gives our freedom practical meaning. Political independence gave us sovereignty. Financial independence must give that sovereignty substance.
