Good to see my discussion with Sarah Gibbons featured in Policing Insight. How do we turn known information into preventative intelligence before it becomes an incident — or evidence in a Serious Case Review? #sexualexploitation #ChildSafeguarding
Greater visibility of unregistered children’s homes and more training for police partner agencies on sharing intelligence would help to improve safeguarding for vulnerable youngsters, says sexual exploitation and systemic reform specialist Debra Cowey, who believes that creating a ‘connected chronology’ around at-risk children – rather than the current fragmented safeguarding history – could improve their protection, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports. Sexual exploitation affecting both children and adults continues to be met with fragmented systems — often intervening too late. ⚠️ 90% reported repeat victimisation 📘 Full report: colouredhearts.com/books-and…

A recent review described my book Grey Zone, Danger Zone as “impelling.” That word matters. This book was written to challenge complacency and expose the grey zones where sexual exploitation is too often ignored or enabled. 📖 amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GNF38MND

1/3 The King’s Speech focused on public service reform, accountability, and institutional resilience. But safeguarding fails when systems stop functioning as systems.👇

2/3 🏥 The NHS is often where harm is first seen — but not always recognised. ⚖️The justice system’s duty is protection, investigation, and prosecution. Both systems carry safeguarding and accountability responsibilities.👇

3/3 Real reform is whether institutions work together effectively from first contact to institutional response. Because safeguarding rarely fails at one point. It fails when systems become fragmented and professional curiosity is not prioritised.

1). During a recent consultation with a Survivor Panel, I asked: “How do you feel about the term ‘Lived Experience’?” The responses were powerful.👇

5). For some, terms like “lived experience” and “survivor” can begin to feel reductive over time. Not empowering, but defining. Good practice is not deciding what people should be called — but instead giving people choice how they are introduced within professional spaces.

6). Trauma-informed practice should not only create opportunities for participation, but also recognise people as more than the experiences that first brought them into the room. Language matters. Choice matters. #TraumaInformed #CoProduction #Leadership #LanguageMatters
