Rare great news about the government finally banning phones in schools. Enraging champagne and hand clapping emojis all round. Next step - get rid of screen based learning. It’s crap, it’s stealing the children’s data and it deepens their screen addiction. Here below is me ranting with the great Prof Jonathan Haidt and Sophie Winkleman on this.
Hugh Grant and Jonathan Haidt share parents' concerns - BigTech is ruthlessly addicting our children to screens. For the full interview with @HackedOffHugh, Sophie Winkleman and @JonHaidt visit -

It’s not often a movie comes along where audiences are left dumbfounded by the sheer humanity of it. Do yourselves a favour and see the Palme D’Or winner this weekend.
Here is @KermodeMovie on Jafar Panahi’s #ItWasJustAnAccident
Just seen #ItWasJustAnAccident 2025 Palme D’Or winner, filmed secretly in Tehran. At one point the director was surrounded by 15 plain clothes policeman demanding he give up all the footage. He didn’t and the result is incredible. See it while you can and then see it again.

45 years ago I made a pitch for the Director-General job. Didn’t get it – mind you, I was only 13. But I did get a reply from Ian Trethowan, who was DG at the time. All these years later I’m proud to work for the BBC.
