📣 New paper alert!
In new work led by @MossaAdele out now in @NatureComms, we find that the autism risk gene #DDX3X is a critical regulator of sexual dimorphisms in neuronal neurodevelopment 🧬 🧠

On February 6, we mark a decade of backing the early-career scientists chasing answers for diseases most people will never hear of, alongside the patient advocacy partners who refuse to let rare mean forgotten, and the families who live it every single day.

New research led by scientists from the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai, published in Autism Research, has estimated that Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) affects approximately 1 in 7,300 people, making it dramatically more common than previous estimates suggested.
Phelan-McDermid syndrome is a rare genetic condition that can cause a wide range of medical, intellectual, and behavioral challenges. The majority of patients also meet the criteria for autism spectrum disorder. The study analyzed data from nearly 180,000 individuals with autism who underwent genetic testing across ten independent sources, and found that thousands of individuals with the condition are likely undiagnosed, in large part due to underutilization of genetic testing.
The findings arrive at a pivotal moment, with multiple Phelan-McDermid syndrome clinical trials now underway.

How often is autism caused by de novo changes to the genome? What is the spectrum of penetrance across autism-associated genes? What can we expect from future autism gene discovery? I'm pleased to share a new preprint where we develop new statistical methods to answer these Qs.

Great to see this out. Satterstrom et al identify 253 genes associated with autism.
