Some honorable mentions, though in order of impact on me instead of chronological like the prior list. Instead of Showdown, my pick is actually Pokemon Netbattle, the first battle simulator with a GUI from the early 2000s and a precursor to later simulators.

Yeah. I was thinking back to when I used to go to Melee LANs in the early 2000s. Always went 0-2 and was immediately done. Only 1 exception where there was around 100 people in a 2 day major with 10-12 player RR pools. No chance of that happening nowadays with 500+ entrants

Splatoon is lucky the way we run LANs - so many riptide attendees don’t know that so many players in other games can go 0-2 or 1-2, and then are done for the whole weekend
