I’m involved in developing the ButterflyCount app to help monitor butterflies (ceh.ac.uk/news-and-media/new…) - part of the Assessing Butterfly for Europe (ABLE) project. Here is my thread on why it adds to other ways of recording and monitoring and how you can get involved. 1/14

What drives innovation in machine learning?
In a new paper, we argue that application-driven work is systemically under-valued in the machine learning community, but that it's essential for both innovation and impact.

BSBI is considering a monthly wildflower hunt using the NYPH method - tracking phenology and floral resources across the whole year using fixed transects. Chris Preston has been doing something similar in Cambridge since 2015 doi.org/10.33928/bib.2020.02…
A soggy #NewYearPlantHunt in Pannal. A rural route with 8 spp in flower (21 same day last month). That’s only 4% of the 199 plants recorded along the 5km route, and no more than a few indivs of each in flower. Will be interesting to see how these figures change through 2024
